Glentoran secured their place in back-to-back BetMcLean Cup finals following their hard-fought 2-1 win over Coleraine on Tuesday evening.
It took 120 minutes to separate the sides at the BetMcLean Oval with Jordan Jenkins’ 103rd minute goal sending the Glens through to face Linfield in next month’s showpiece final at the Clearer Twist National Stadium.
Pat Hoban had fired the hosts in front in first half stoppage time before Joel Cooper levelled the tie in the 53rd minute.
It was nip and tuck in horrible weather conditions before Jenkins popped up with the winner in extra-time much to the delight of the home support.
Declan Devine rang the changes with goalkeeper Billy Crellin, Daniel Larmour, skipper Marcus Kane, Ryan Cooney, Liam Burt and Jordan Jenkins all drafted into the starting XI following Saturday’s 2-0 win at Dungannon Swifts.
The windswept conditions made it a challenging start for both sides at the BetMcLean Oval.
After a cagey start both sides missed chances on the quarter hour mark as Matthew Shevlin failed to connect with Ben Wylie’s cutback for the Bannsiders before Daniel Larmour couldn’t get his head on a cross at the other end.
Crellin was then forced into action on 20 minutes as Joel Cooper worked his way into the Glentoran box before getting a shot away which the ‘keeper did well to block with his legs.
Chances were few and far between for the majority of the half as the conditions played their part, but that was to change in first half stoppage time as the hosts edged in front.
Coleraine failed to deal with Ryan Cooney’s free kick into the box with Hoban alert as ever to fire home at the back post after a scramble in front of goal.
Eight minutes into the second half the hosts were pegged back as Cooper held off his marker as he surged into the box before unleashing a powerful shot, which flew into the net giving Crellin no chance.
The visitors went close to edging in front on 74 minutes when Wylie picked out Shevlin in the box, but the frontman glanced his header wide.
No further goals arrived in normal time so it was onto 30 minutes of extra-time with Glentoran retaking the lead three minutes after the restart.
Danny Amos picked out Joe Thomson in the box, his shot was parried by Ryan Schofield but Jenkins was on hand to fire in the rebound.
Glentoran should have sealed in on 103 minutes as Cooney picked out Hoban with a delicious cross but the striker couldn’t find the target with his header.
The Bannsiders ramped up the pressure in the second period of extra-time but Glentoran stood firm to book their place in next month’s final against Big Two rivals Linfield.
