Jenkins goal in vain as Glens slip to narrow loss

Glentoran gave a valiant display but came away empty-handed after a 2-1 defeat to Linfield this afternoon at Windsor Park.
All three goals came during a frenetic opening period. Callum Morrison opened the scoring for the hosts, before Jordan Jenkins equalised for the Glens. However, Kirk Millar restored Linfield’s lead before the break – and it proved to be the winner.
The game’s first goal arrived inside the opening minutes. Joel Cooper delivered a cross from the left, and although Morrison appeared to have taken a heavy second touch, he recovered well to tuck the ball into the bottom right-hand corner from 12 yards. Dániel Gyollai got a hand to it but couldn’t keep it out.
Glentoran responded almost immediately. Jenkins laid the ball off to the onrushing Charlie Lindsay just outside the area, but the midfielder scuffed his shot wide of David Walsh’s left-hand post.
On 23 minutes, the Glens deservedly drew level. David Fisher did well to scoop the ball across goal from the left, Dylan Connolly headed it back across at the far post, and while Joe Thomson mishit his effort, it fell kindly to Jenkins. The striker made no mistake, slotting calmly into the bottom left corner.
But Linfield regained the lead just seven minutes later. Jamie Mulgrew drove to the by-line and delivered an outside-of-the-boot pass across goal, where Millar tapped in unmarked from close range.
Half-Time: Linfield 2 – 1 Glentoran

The second half started with the same intensity. Millar whipped in a dangerous cross that narrowly evaded Matthew Fitzpatrick before Fisher went close at the other end with a deflected effort.
On the hour, Joel Cooper had three chances in quick succession – cutting in from the right and seeing his first effort blocked, blasting the second wide and being denied by a sharp Gyollai stop on the third attempt.
Ten minutes later, Fitzpatrick raced through one-on-one, but pressure from the Glentoran defence forced him into a tame finish which Gyollai gathered comfortably.
The Glens kept pushing and Jenkins went close again with ten minutes to play, but despite their efforts, there was no way through for Declan Devine’s men.
Full-Time: Linfield 2 – 1 Glentoran
