Hoban and Palmer fire Glens to victory at Stangmore Park

Glentoran marked their return to Sports Direct Premiership action with an impressive 2-0 win at Dungannon Swifts.

It was nip and tuck in the first half at Stangmore Park with the Glens edging in front two minutes before the break thanks to a close range header from ace marksman Pat Hoban.

And the visitors made sure of the points with 20 minutes to go when Cammy Palmer ran on to a Hoban knockdown before slamming a low finish past Declan Dunne in the Swifts goal.

Declan Devine handed debuts to recent signings Ross Clarke and Jarlath O’Rourke following their moves from Crusaders.

The hosts made a bright start to the game with Adam Glenny inches away from connecting with Leo Alves’ corner in the first minute.

Tiernan Kelly then headed over from another Alves set-piece as we headed towards the 10 minute mark.

The Glens started to find their feet as Joe Thompson and Jordan Stewart both had efforts blocked.

The hosts should have broken the deadlock on 26 minutes after Andrew Mills could only parry Caolan Marron’s header from Kealan Dillon’s free-kick into Danny Wallace’s path, but the defender could find the target.

Glentoran started to threaten as we moved towards the break with MJ Kamson-Kamara going close with a header before James Singleton crashed a shot off the woodwork.

The pressure from the visitors finally told in the 43rd minute as Hoban beat Dunne to Thomson’s corner to head in from close range.

The hosts thought they had levelled things up five minutes after the restart, but Marron’s goal was ruled out for offside.

Kelly then fired over for the Swifts after creating space on the edge of the box to get a shot away.

At the other end O’Rourke almost capped an impressive debut with a goal but he just failed to make contact with Stewart’s cross as we moved into the final 20 minutes.

The visitors did double their advantage a minute later as Palmer latched on to Hoban’s knockdown, holding off his marker before firing into the bottom corner.

The second goal killed off any threat from Dungannon as Glentoran stood firm to seal a third win in a row.
