Pat Hoban and Ryan Cooney produced an absolute masterclass to put Glentoran in seventh heaven at Carrick Rangers this afternoon.
Top hitman Hoban bagged a double hat-trick becoming the first player to do so in the Irish League since Gary Hamilton in 2004, with Cooney providing six assists in superb 7-0 win.
Hoban had bagged four by the break against a sorry Carrick side, who had Rhys Glendinning dismissed on 27 minutes for a high challenge on Jordan Jenkins.
Hoban added a quickfire double after the break to take his tally to six for the afternoon before Liam Burt added the pick of the bunch with a superb seventh goal.
Both sides were on the front foot from the first whistle with the hosts threatening from a couple of early corners before Hoban drilled an effort narrowly wide of the goal.
But the ace marksman wasn’t to be denied as he broke the deadlock with nine minutes on the clock, firing past Scott Pengelly after Cooney had picked him out in the box.
The same pairing combined to double Glentoran’s advantage just five minutes later as Cooney’s set-piece picked out Hoban to glance home his 10th of the season.
Things went from bad to worse for the home side before the half hour as they were reduced to 10 men after Glendinning saw red for a challenge on Jenkins.
The game was all but done and dusted four minutes before the break as Hoban showed all his composure in front of goal as he netted his third to claim the match ball.
The visitors and Hoban weren’t done just yet though as he headed home a fourth goal before the half-time whistle after Carrick failed to deal with another Cooney delivery.
The second half continued in a similar vein as Hoban netted his and Glentoran’s fifth on 50 minutes from yet another superb Cooney delivery.
Remarkably the deadly duo combined once again a minute later with Hoban tapping home from Cooney’s pass to complete a double hat-trick for the experienced frontman.
Despite Hoban departing to rapturous applause soon after the goal scoring wasn’t over just yet as Burt curled home a superb effort with Cooney yet again providing the assist to complete a remarkable afternoon’s work for Glentoran as they made it four wins on the bounce.
