Happy Birthday Tom - 100 Not Out

Thu, 30/04/2020 - 17:12

One of the key players in Glentoran’s famous Vienna Cup victory in 1914 was George Ferrett. He was part of Glentoran's famed half-back line Emerson Ferrett and Scraggs.

George's son Tom now resides in Palmerston Nursing Home in East Belfast and today (Thursday 30 April) is his 100th birthday.

To mark Tom’s centenary, Glentoran Director John Moore visited Palmerston with a special surprise for Tom – the Vienna Cup! Obviously, due to Covid-19, John was unable to enter the nursing home, but Tom and the nursing team were able to come to meet John at the door (social distancing observed) to see the cup close up. John also presented tom with a framed photograph of his Dad in full Glentoran strip, on behalf of the club.

Also today, the staff at Palmerston held a 100th Birthday Party for Tom. Pride of place was this very special birthday cake baked and donated by diehard Glenman Gary McAlees from All You Need Is Cake.

Earlier in the week Sam Robinson had arranged a birthday video message to Tom from Glentoran Chairman Stephen Henderson, and a reply was sent by Tom. These can be viewed on the club Twitter and Facebook pages.

Many thanks to PACEMAKER for joining John at Palmerston and supplying great photos from the day. Also, thanks to the Palmerston care team for the photograph of Tom’s cake, to Gary McAlees for the cake and to Sam Robinson for his help in setting up the event.

Happy Birthday Tom. From all your friends in the Glentoran Family.
