Glentoran Women’s UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign came to an end on Wednesday afternoon as Kim Turner’s side were beaten 4-1 by Riga FC Women in the First Qualifying Round Mini Tournament semi-final in Wrexham.

The Glens created a number of promising opportunities throughout the contest but were unable to make them count as the Latvian champions progressed to Friday’s mini tournament final.

Glentoran started brightly and looked dangerous from several early set-pieces. Kelly Crompton fired narrowly wide following a corner before Faye Loughran headed over from another inviting delivery as the Glens searched for an early breakthrough.

Despite the positive opening, Riga took the lead after 33 minutes when Shiori Kato’s cross from the right was met by Kumba Brima, who headed home at the back post.

The Glens continued to threaten before the break and came close to levelling through Mia Moore, whose effort drifted just wide after she found space inside the penalty area.

Riga doubled their advantage 11 minutes into the second half when Renate Gaugere rose highest to head home from Minami Oi’s corner.

Glentoran continued to push forward and almost reduced the deficit when Gracie Conway was presented with a good opportunity, but Riga held firm before extending their lead with 10 minutes remaining following an unfortunate own goal.

The Glens continued to battle until the final whistle and were rewarded in the 84th minute. Demi Vance delivered an excellent cross from the left and Faye Loughran powered a header into the net to score Glentoran’s first goal of this season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign.

With the Glens committing players forward in stoppage time, Brima added her second goal of the afternoon to complete the scoring.
