Glentoran Women fell to a dramatic 4-2 defeat against Cliftonville Ladies in Sunday’s VBET Women’s League Cup Final at Seaview, despite holding a two-goal lead at the break.
A blistering first-half performance from the Glens saw Emily Wilson strike twice to put her side in control. The forward capitalised on a defensive error to slot home the opener inside four minutes, before latching onto a superb Demi Vance through ball to double the advantage just after the half-hour mark.
But Cliftonville responded strongly after the restart. Caitlin McGuinness pulled one back with a low finish into the bottom corner, before heading in the equaliser just after the hour from a Naomi McLaughlin corner.
The Reds completed the turnaround with six minutes remaining as Marissa Callaghan nodded home from close range following another McLaughlin set-piece delivery.
Things worsened for Glentoran in stoppage time when Kascie Weir was shown a contentious red card following an alleged off-the-ball incident involving Fionnuala Morgan.
To compound the frustration, substitute Carla Devine added a fourth goal moments later, converting from close range to seal the result for Cliftonville.
