Glentoran Women 8-1 Lisburn Ladies

Sat, 20/05/2023 - 10:44

A four goal first half blitz from long serving striker Rachel Rogan was the key to this comprehensive win that maintained the Glens’ 100% start to the season and maintained their position as joint table toppers after five games.

The Glens made three changes from the win over Sion Swifts with Rogan, midfielder Sam Kelly and goalie Ashleigh McKinnon given their first Premiership starts of the season and with Ellie Scott, Joely Andrews and leading scorer Kerry Beattie rested on the bench.

Rogan made it clear she was determined to take her chance when on seven minutes she slid the ball under the diving Jess Poots for the opener. Four minutes later she met an Emma McMaster flick with a decisive finish.

Caragh Hamilton continued her own strong start to the season when on twenty minutes she made it 3-0 when she took a touch past the keeper to finish easily. Two minutes later Rogan was again on the scoresheet again she exploited  a mistake at the back and gets her hat trick with a volley.

Glentoran weren’t finished for the half as a fourth from Rogie and a great finish by Emily Wilson from a Hamilton solo run made it six. The only downside was conceding the first goal of the season when a good save from Ashleigh McKinnon rebounded off the bar and hit the unfortunate Glens keeper before bouncing into the open net. Still, 6-1 was a welcome half time score.

Unsurprisingly the second half was a quieter affair with Glens management using it to give some other players gametime. On 67 Kerry Beattie – on as a substitute for Rogan – converted a penalty and Caragh Hamilton finished superbly after a great  and unstoppable solo run into the Lisburn box. This was Hamilton’s eighth of the season, level with Beattie as Glentoran’s top scorer so far.

Next up is a trip to Ballymena Showgrounds on Wednesday  (24h May) at 7.45pm, with a massive game v the other pacesetters. Cliftonville Ladies at Solitude on Friday 2nd June.
