Glentoran Football Club, facilitated by the Glentoran Social Partnership, will welcome Cancer Focus Northern Ireland’s Keeping Well service to The BetMcLean Oval on Wednesday 30 September 2026, offering supporters and members of the local community access to free health checks and professional advice.
The visit has been funded by Henry Brothers, the Northern Ireland-headquartered construction and civil engineering company, as part of its commitment to supporting the health and wellbeing of local communities through social value initiatives connected to their Queens University Belfast Momentum One Zero Project located in the Titanic Quarter.
Delivered from Cancer Focus NI’s mobile Keeping Well facility, each confidential 30-minute appointment will include body composition and BMI assessments, blood pressure and blood glucose checks, and personalised guidance from the charity’s health promotion team and cancer prevention nurse.
Those attending will also receive information about cancer screening programmes, advice on recognising the signs and symptoms of cancer, and practical guidance on lifestyle changes that can help reduce their cancer risk. Stop smoking advice and support will also be available.
Leanne Dawson, Operations Manager at Glentoran, said: “We are delighted to welcome the Keeping Well service to The BetMcLean Oval and hugely grateful to Henry Brothers for funding the visit.
“Glentoran is at the heart of east Belfast and we want to use that position to make a positive difference within our community.
“This is a valuable opportunity for our supporters and local residents to access a free health check, speak directly with the Cancer Focus NI team and receive professional advice about their health.
“Places are limited, so I would encourage anyone interested to book an appointment as soon as possible.”
Name, Julie McKeown, HR Director at Henry Brothers said: “Henry Brothers is proud to fund the visit of Cancer Focus NI’s Keeping Well service to The BetMcLean Oval.
“The health and wellbeing of the people and communities around us is extremely important to our business. Supporting this initiative is a practical way for us to help more people access trusted health information and advice.
“We hope the service encourages people to take a proactive approach to their health, and we are pleased to work alongside Glentoran and Cancer Focus NI to bring it to east Belfast.”
Marese Fullen, Keeping Well Service Coordinator at Cancer Focus NI, said: “It can be easy to put off thinking about our health, particularly when life is busy, which is why bringing the Keeping Well service directly into local communities is so important.
“Each appointment gives people dedicated time with our experienced team to learn more about their health, ask questions and receive practical, personalised advice on reducing their cancer risk.
“We are grateful to Henry Brothers for funding the visit and to Glentoran for helping us make this free service available at The BetMcLean Oval.”
Around four in ten cancers are preventable, making prevention an important opportunity to save lives and reduce pressure on health services.
Cancer prevention is one of five commitments set out by Cancer Focus NI ahead of the next Northern Ireland Assembly. Supporters can back the charity’s plans to prevent more cancers and reduce health inequalities by signing its online petition at: http://www.cancerfocusni.org/
