Glentoran Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Tommy Young, father of our former player and manager Scott Young.
Although based in Glasgow, Tommy followed Scott’s career closely throughout his years at The BetMcLean Oval and travelled to East Belfast to support him whenever he could. His quiet encouragement and pride in his son’s achievements were well known to those close to the club.
Scott remains one of the defining figures of Glentoran’s modern era. Joining the club in 1998, he quickly became a supporter favourite and played a central role in a hugely successful period, winning three league titles, three Irish Cups and multiple League Cups and County Antrim Shields. His playing career was cut short in 2006 after a series of serious injuries, but his bond and love for the Glens remained.
He returned as manager in 2010, guiding Glentoran to the Irish League Cup and later the County Antrim Shield, achievements delivered during a particularly challenging financial period for the club.
Colin Jess, Chairman of Glentoran has spoken directly with Scott and passed on condolences on behalf of everyone at the Club.
Everyone at Glentoran sends their heartfelt sympathies to Scott, his brother David, their mother Marion and the wider Young family at this difficult time.
