Glentoran Seconds continued their impressive start to the campaign with a hard-fought 3–2 victory over Dungannon Swifts Reserves in the NIFL Premiership Development League on Monday evening.
A strong starting XI, featuring first-team squad members Charlie Lindsay, Frankie Hvid and James Douglas, underlined Glentoran’s intent as the side battled back from an early setback to secure a vital three points at Ashfield High School.
Dungannon struck first after just four minutes through Eoghan Liggett, punishing a slow start from the home side.
But the Glens responded with composure and control and on 29 minutes Jude Johnson calmly converted from the penalty spot to level the contest.
Dungannon were then reduced to ten men shortly afterwards and Glentoran wasted no time in capitalising when Lindsay fired home a second penalty just five minutes later.
Cal Weatherup added a well-taken third on 41 minutes to give his side a 3–1 lead at the break.
Oisin Keenan’s goal on 51 minutes gave the visitors a lifeline and set up a competitive second half, but Glentoran’s defensive unit, marshalled by Hvid and Owen O’Neill, stood firm to see out the result.
The win moves Glentoran to the top of the NIFL Premiership Development League table on 24 points, level with Linfield Swifts but with two games in hand on their nearest rivals.
