Glentoran Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former player Billy Totten.

Billy joined Glentoran in 1988 from Coleraine and went on to represent the club with pride over three seasons, making around 80 appearances during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

A versatile and hard-working winger, he was a valued and popular member of the squad who quickly earned the respect of his teammates and supporters alike.

During his time at the Oval, Billy featured in Glentoran’s 1988–89 European Cup fixture against Spartak Moscow, playing in both legs of the tie, a 2-0 defeat in Moscow and a 1-1 draw at the Oval, as the Glens bowed out 3-1 on aggregate.

Since news of his passing, memories and tributes have been flooding in from the Glentoran Ex-Players’ group, reflecting the deep affection and respect in which Billy was held by his former teammates and friends.

Speaking on behalf of his former teammates, Andy Mathieson said: “Sad news to hear about Tottsy. Great memories, especially our trip to Moscow. Billy was a smashing lad and a great teammate, the kind of player every dressing room needs. He was always upbeat, always encouraging and gave everything for the shirt.

“Off the pitch he was just as genuine, kind, humble, and full of good humour. The ex-players’ group chat has been devastated by the news, but it’s been full of great stories and fond memories that show just how highly everyone thought of him. Those of us who had the privilege of knowing him will remember him with huge affection and pride. Rest easy my friend.”

Everyone at Glentoran extends our heartfelt condolences to the Totten family and Billy’s many friends at this sad time.
