Glentoran Pays Tribute to Roy Welsh

Fri 27 Jun 2025, 14:33

Glentoran Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former player Roy Welsh, who was laid to rest earlier today.

Roy joined the Glens from Distillery in 1967 and made an immediate and lasting impact. A powerful centre forward with a thunderous shot and commanding presence, he played a key role in securing the Irish League title in his debut season, quickly becoming a firm favourite with Glentoran supporters. Though he departed for Ards in 1970, his contribution to the club remains warmly remembered.

Away from the pitch, Roy was a devoted family man – the much-loved husband of Evelyn and cherished father to Darren and Gavin.

Everyone at Glentoran extends our heartfelt condolences to Roy’s family and friends at this sad time.

Roy is pictured in the front row, second from the left, as part of the 67/68 title-winning squad.
