Glentoran FC is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former player George Allen Thompson, who has passed away at the age of 95.
A talented and skilful outside-right, Thompson was first spotted by a Glentoran scout in the years following the Second World War while playing at youth level for the Boys’ Brigade. He went on to enjoy a distinguished career with the Glens throughout the 1950s.
At just 21 years old, Thompson was part of the legendary 1950-51 Glentoran squad that secured a clean sweep of domestic honours – winning the Irish League, Irish Cup, City Cup and Ulster Cup.
His performances attracted interest from clubs across the water, with Millwall and Bolton Wanderers offering him the opportunity to move to England. However, Thompson’s loyalty to Glentoran and the Irish League led him to turn down both moves, choosing instead to continue representing the club he loved.
In addition to his time at The Oval, Thompson also played for Crusaders and Ards, but his heart was always with Glentoran. Even after retiring from the game, he remained closely connected to the club, continuing to serve in a scouting role.
Everyone at Glentoran FC extends their heartfelt condolences to George Allen Thompson’s family at this sad time.
