Glentoran will look to build on their recent winning run as they host Portadown in the Sports Direct Premiership on Saturday 16th November 2024 at the BetMcLean Oval.
The Glens head into the fixture on the back of two impressive results: a commanding 3-0 league victory away to Glenavon and a hard-fought 2-0 win over Ballymena United in the ToalsBet.Com County Antrim Shield semi-final, securing their place in the first showpiece final of the season.
Manager Declan Devine has praised his players for their commitment and work ethic, highlighting how these qualities are finally delivering the results their performances have merited.
Devine said: “Tuesday night against Ballymena was a tense affair, but we fully deserved the win. There have been occasions this season where we’ve played better but ended up drawing or losing, but the players dug deep and delivered a workmanlike performance to secure the victory.
“We created enough chances to be out of sight but didn’t take them, yet the players’ commitment was outstanding from start to finish. Securing our spot in the final of the County Antrim Shield is a fantastic boost for both the squad and the fans.
“This result, combined with the excellent performance against Glenavon, shows that the hard work and consistency the players have demonstrated all season is finally paying off. Now it’s about maintaining this momentum and putting together a run of results.”
Glentoran head into Saturday’s clash with Portadown in strong shape despite some absences, with James Singleton serving the final game of his suspension and Patrick McClean sidelined for the next couple of weeks due to a groin injury.
Declan Devine said: “Aaron Wightman’s return to competitive football has been a real boost for us. He’s slotted back in seamlessly and brought great energy to the squad. Marcus Kane has also been exceptional at centre-back-his leadership has been crucial in keeping us solid at the back.
“It was fantastic to see both Dylan Connolly and Jordan Jenkins find the net against Ballymena. Jordan, in particular, hasn’t had many starts recently, so I was delighted to see him seize his opportunity. He’s a natural finisher, and I’m confident there are plenty more goals in him between now and the end of the season.”
Devine also acknowledged the challenge posed by an in-form Portadown side. Currently sitting 7th in the league table, the Ports have won four of their last five matches, including a notable victory over reigning Sports Direct Premiership champions Larne. Former Glentoran forward Shay McCartan has been pivotal to their recent success, notably scoring a stunning long-range goal to secure the win against Larne.
Devine said: “We know Portadown are a team in great form and will come to the BetMcLean Oval full of confidence. They’ve got a strong squad, an excellent manager in Niall Currie, and plenty of quality players who can cause us problems.
“When we faced them earlier this season, it took a last-minute goal to secure the win at Shamrock Park. This will be another tough game, but we’re confident we have the quality in the squad to win and deliver a performance that secures three points for the fans.”
Glentoran’s preparations for this weekend’s fixture have been bolstered by yesterday’s signing of experienced defender Shane McEleney. The former Derry City centre-back has signed an 18-month deal and will be eligible to play from 1st January 2025.
Devine said: “Shane’s experience will be invaluable to us, particularly in guiding and supporting a young squad. He’s a tremendous leader on and off the pitch and will add significant depth to our defensive options. We’re excited to welcome him into the group when he returns from a short holiday and look forward to the impact he’ll make in the second half of the season.”
