Glentoran 7 - 0 Belfast Celtic

Tue, 11/04/2017 - 21:04

Monday 10th April saw Glentoran BU kick off their first cup campaign of the season travelling away to Belfast Celtic. Belfast Celtic were the first team off the mark, putting the Glentoran defence under pressure straight away and causing keeper Ashleigh McKinnon to come off her line.  Caragh Milligan started causing trouble on the right hand side finding Orla Swail who thread the ball through the keeper’s legs to make it 1-0 to the visitors after 4 minutes.  After Swail’s goal Glentoran quickly settled into the game with Nadine Caldwell and Katie Martin dictating play from the middle producing a string of chances and it wasn’t until the 34th minute when Swail doubled her tally. Shortly after Milligan added to the scoresheet, skipping past players before placing the ball in the back of the net. The premiership side dominated first half play but could not relax, with Belfast Celtic’s pacey striker keeping defenders Jessica Foy and Cathy Rees on their toes.

After the break double goalscorer Swail was replaced by Murray at halftime. The second half commenced with Glentoran once again taking charge of play, whilst frustration showed from the home side resulting in some strong challenges on the visitors. First chance of the half fell to Rachel Rogan who slotted the ball home after a corner delivery from Kerry Eddis only to be ruled offside by the referee. It wasn’t long before Rogan redeemed herself scoring the fourth goal of the night for Glentoran on the 60th minute. Glentoran’s next two goals came in quick succession with both strikers, Rogan and Ali McMaster stepping up to the plate.  Belfast Celtic’s frustration led to unsportsmanship like behaviour from Stewart who received a yellow card from the referee. The seventh a final goal was a terrific strike from McMaster, taking her tally to three goals in two games.  The final substitution of the game saw  Kelly replace McMaster in the closing minutes.
