Glentoran maintained their unbeaten start to the Sports Direct Premiership season with a 1–1 draw against Linfield in the first Big Two meeting of the campaign at the BetMcLean Oval on Friday night.
Pat Hoban’s first-half penalty gave the Glens the advantage, but Chris Shields levelled from the spot after the break to ensure the points were shared.
After a competitive opening, Andrew Mills saved from Kieran Offord before Matthew Fitzpatrick shot wide following a misplaced pass. The breakthrough for the Glens came on 21 minutes when James Singleton was brought down inside the box. Hoban, who has now scored in successive league games, calmly converted from twelve yards to put the Glens ahead.
The game continued at high intensity, with both sides battling for control in midfield. Linfield levelled on 62 minutes when Shields fired home from the penalty spot after Marcus Kane was adjudged to have fouled Matthew Fitzpatrick.
Both sides pushed for a winner in a frenetic closing spell. Sean Brown struck the crossbar for the visitors, while substitute Jordan Jenkins went close in stoppage time, but neither side could find the decisive breakthrough.
The result extends Glentoran’s unbeaten start to the campaign to seven matches and keeps Devine’s men top of the Premiership ahead of next Friday’s trip to Coleraine.
