Glentoran Seconds remain five points clear at the top of the Premiership Development League following a 1–1 draw with Linfield Swifts in Monday night’s top-of-the-table clash at Ashfield Boys’ High School.

The Glens went into the fixture sitting top of the table, five points ahead of second-placed Linfield, with both sides having played 19 league matches. With little separating the two leading sides, another tight and competitive encounter unfolded.

Captain Ciaran Rogers-Duffy returned to the starting XI following suspension, making his first appearance since the sides last met in early December.

The Glens Seconds’ leading league scorer James McClure led the line alongside the impressive Cal Weatherup, while Jude Johnson was unavailable after joining Annagh United on loan for the remainder of the season.

Glentoran took the lead in the first half when McClure was brought down on the edge of the penalty area. Weatherup stepped up and confidently dispatched the resulting spot-kick to give the Glens the advantage.

The opening period was otherwise scrappy and stop-start, with little fluency from either side, and the Glens were dealt a blow when Owen O’Neill was forced off through injury before the interval.

Linfield drew level early in the second half, cancelling out Glentoran’s first-half advantage.

The remainder of the half developed into an open, end-to-end affair, though clear chances were limited and neither goalkeeper was seriously tested.

The Glens were forced into two further changes when Weatherup and McClure were forced off mid-way through the half.

Glentoran pushed for a late winner and came agonisingly close in the closing stages when Magowan rose to meet a delivery, only to see his header strike the crossbar.

The result means Glentoran Seconds remain five points clear of Linfield Swifts at the top of the NIFL Premiership Development League, with both sides now having played 20 matches.

Next up for the Glens is an away fixture at Shamrock Park, where they will face Portadown Reserves.
