Glentoran had to settle for a point as their Sports Direct Premiership clash with Carrick Rangers ended in a 0-0 draw at Taylor’s Avenue.
Despite controlling possession for large periods and twice hitting the woodwork, Declan Devine’s side were unable to find a breakthrough against a well-organised Carrick defence.
The game’s first major talking point arrived in the third minute, when Ethan Boyle turned the ball home for Carrick, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside
Six minutes later, Glentoran went close to opening the scoring. Ciaran Coll’s delivery from the left was met by David Fisher, whose header struck the post before Joe Crowe cleared the danger.
The visitors were inches away again on 20 minutes, when a misplaced clearance from Carrick goalkeeper Jack McIntyre fell kindly for Fisher, but his effort clipped the outside of the post.
Carrick had a penalty appeal turned down just before half-time when the ball struck Coll’s arm in the area, but referee Louise Thompson pointed for a corner instead.
Half-Time: Carrick Rangers 0 – 0 Glentoran
The second period saw both sides battle for control, but clear opportunities were limited.
Carrick’s best opening came in the 78th minute, when Nedas Maciulaitis sent a low ball across goal for Boyle, whose diving header was blocked on the line by Marcus Kane.
Moments later, Maciulaitis forced a smart reaction save from Dániel Gyollai with a shot from inside the area.
Glentoran pushed forward in search of a late winner, and their best chance fell to Kane, who struck a volley from the edge of the box in stoppage time, but McIntyre got down well to save.
Full-Time: Carrick Rangers 0 – 0 Glentoran
