Glens determined to get back to winning ways in Irish Cup clash

Glentoran midfielder Cameron Palmer insists he and his teammates are fully focused on returning to winning ways as they prepare for a crucial Clearer Water Irish Cup Quarter-Final showdown against NIFL Championship leaders Bangor at Clandeboye Park on Friday night (Kick-off: 7:45pm).
Having already secured the County Antrim Shield and booked a place in the BetMcLean Cup Final, Glentoran will be aiming to take another step toward their 24th Clearer Water Irish Cup triumph – and their first since 2020 – by overcoming the Seasiders and booking their place in the semi-finals.
The Glens’ impressive 16-game unbeaten run was brought to an end with a 2-0 defeat to Cliftonville at Solitude last Friday evening. However, with silverware and automatic European qualification still firmly in their sights, Palmer is confident the squad will deliver the right response.
Cameron Palmer said: “The defeat to Cliftonville was disappointing and we know our second-half performance didn’t meet the high standards we set for ourselves. The message from the manager and the coaching staff has been clear – we have to regroup, refocus and be ready to go again.

“We’ve already lifted the County Antrim Shield, booked our place in the BetMcLean Cup Final, and we’re sitting second in the league. Friday night is another massive game. We’ve worked really hard in training all week, we’re fully prepared and we’re ready to deliver a winning performance that gets us into the semi-finals.”

Standing in Glentoran’s way is a Bangor side brimming with confidence at the top of the NIFL Championship. Under the leadership of Lee Feeney, the Seasiders have been one of the most dynamic and dangerous teams outside the Premiership, posing a formidable attacking threat.
Palmer said: “Bangor are top of the Championship for a reason. They’ve got real quality throughout their squad, particularly in the final third, and under Lee Feeney’s guidance, they’ll be well-drilled and fully prepared for this game. Playing at home, under the lights and in front of a packed crowd, they’ll see this as a big opportunity to cause a so-called cup upset.
“They’ll come at us with real intensity and we have to be ready for it. This is going to be a really tough game and we need to stand up to the challenge, win our battles, and make sure we come out on top. It’s going to take aggression, relentless work rate and imposing ourselves in every area of the pitch.

“The Irish Cup is special and we’re determined to be the team lifting that trophy in May. But first, we need to take care of business on Friday night against a very good Bangor side.”
With Glentoran battling on multiple fronts this season, the demands of a relentless fixture schedule have put the squad’s depth to the test in recent weeks. Yet, Palmer and his teammates remain fully focused on winning the BetMcLean Cup and Clearer Water Irish Cup, as well as to secure automatic European qualification.
Cameron said: “The demands of the season mean we need quality options all over the pitch and thankfully we have that. We’ve had players dealing with knocks and injuries, which is natural when you’re competing on multiple fronts, but that’s why squad depth is so important. Every player in this squad is ready to step up when called upon and that’s been key to keeping us competitive in every competition.
“Declan recognised that and brought in new players in January to give us more depth and quality. That’s been massive for us because when you’re playing so many games, you need players ready to come in and make an impact. Whether it’s injuries, suspensions or just the demands of the schedule, we expect these challenges and wouldn’t have it any other way.
“If you want to be successful, you have to be prepared to handle a congested schedule and adapt when players are unavailable. We have a squad full of talented players and everyone is fully focused on making sure we finish the season as strongly as possible.”
Palmer, who recently signed an 18-month contract extension to keep him at The BetMcLean Oval until the end of the 2025/26 season, has been a key figure in Glentoran’s midfield this campaign. Having battled through an injury-hit first season, the 24-year-old believes he is now delivering his best football and is determined to drive the team forward.
Palmer said: “I feel great at the moment. Extending my contract was a no-brainer because I love playing for this club. The fans have been brilliant with me and I want to repay that faith by helping the team win trophies and secure European football.

“Playing under a manager like Declan Devine is massive for any player. He’s transformed the club, brought in outstanding players and created an environment where everyone wants to play for him. His attention to detail, along with the meticulous preparation of his coaching staff, ensures we go into every game fully prepared. Every session is intense, every tactical setup is well thought out and that’s why we’ve been so competitive on all fronts this season.
“He demands high standards, but that’s what top players want – to be pushed to their limits and to improve every day. The squad has complete trust in him and the coaching staff and you can see how much belief there is in the dressing room. We know what we’re capable of and with the manager driving us forward, we’re determined to make this a successful season for Glentoran.”
This match is SOLD OUT, but fans without a ticket can watch live coverage on BBC iPlayer and on the BBC Sport NI website.
