Glentoran put their BetMcLean Cup final disappointment behind them as they swept Cliftonville aside running out 3-0 winners to close the gap on Irish Premiership leaders Larne to two pints.
Daniel Larmour headed the Glens in front on 25 minutes before a double from Pat Hoban on 52 and 61 minutes wrapped up the win for the home side.
Hoban’s brace took his tally to four in his last two games against the Reds completing another good night’s work for the east Belfast men.
Declan Devine made five changes to the side which lost Sunday’s final as Andrew Mills, Daniel Larmour, Jarlath O’Rourke, Jack Malone and Ross Clarke all came into the starting XI with Billy Crellin, Marcus Kane, Jordan Stewart, Aaron McEneff and Josh Daniels all dropping out.
It was Cliftonville who threatened first as Brian Healy raced in behind the Glens defence on 11 minutes but his angled shot was blocked by Mills.
The visitors had a let off on 17 minutes as PJ Morrison miscontrolled a back pass, but the keeper recovered in time to clear the ball before Danny Amos blazed over from a tight angle.
Jarlath O’Rourke then picked out Larmour in the box on 23 minutes with the defender heading straight at Morrison.
The former Crusaders man made no mistake two minutes later as he stopped to head home after Cliftonville failed to deal with Ryan Cooney’s long throw.
As we moved towards the break Jack Malone had the ball in the back of the Reds net, but it was ruled out for a foul in the build-up.
Before the whistle MJ Kamson-Kamara headed narrowly wide from Cooney’s corner.
The hosts doubled their lead seven minutes into the second half as Larmour nodded the ball into the path of Hoban, who coolly flicked it over Morrison.
The ace marksman didn’t have long to wait for his second as he reacted quickest to slot home after an attempted clearance from a Cliftonville player came back off the post.
Amos drew a good save out of Morrison on 65 minutes with Cammy Palmer unable to turn in the rebound.
The Cliftonville stopper was called into action again minutes later this time to parry a Cooney effort before gathering at the second attempt.
Larmour was inches away from a second of his own before the end but his header from Cooney’s free-kick crashed off the woodwork.
