Four-star Glentoran see off Strabane Athletic

Glentoran produced a professional display to see off Strabane Atheltic and set up an Irish Cup sixth round meeting with Drumaness Mills next month.

The Premier Intermediate League side gave a good account of themselves in the opening quarter of the game before Jordan Stewart put the hosts in front.

Goals from Pat Hoban either side of the break dispelled any thoughts of a cup shock before MJ Kamson-Kamara headed home the fourth late on to complete a good night’s work for the Glens.

Boss Declan Devine made six changes to the side which won 1-0 at Glenavon on Saturday with Stewart, Billy Crellin, Dylan Connolly, Danny Amos, James Douglas and recent recruit Jack Malone all coming into the starting eleven.

There was a late change to the line-up after Ben Gallagher picked up an injury in the warm-up and was replaced by Liam Burt.

The hosts almost got off to the perfect start as Stewart found himself in a good position in front of the Strabane goal, but he failed to hit the target.

The visitors carved out an early chance of their own when Oisin Porter teed up Niall McGinley, who fired narrowly over.

Oisin Duffy then tried an audacious long range effort after the Glens offered up possession on the halfway line, but his effort flew wide of the goal with Billy Crellin off his line.

At the other end Cammy Palmer drew a good save from Shane O’Gara before the home side edged in front with 21 minutes on the clock.

Danny Amos, who was proving to be a real threat down the left-hand side, picked out Stewart in the box who confidently swept home a composed finish.

Glentoran had a huge let off on the half hour after Niall McGinley took advantage of a slip by Daniel Larmour before racing in on goal, but his lob over Crellin dropped the wrong side of the goal for Strabane Athletic.

The Glens doubled their lead deep into first half stoppage time as captain for the night Hoban produced a typically composed close range finish after James Douglas’ shot was diverted into his path.

Hoban went close to making it 3-0 five minutes into the second half before Stewart had a header saved by O’Gara.

As we moved towards the final half an hour Douglas tried another effort from outside the box which O’Gara did well to tip over.

O’Gara was left helpless as the Glens extended their lead on 64 minutes with Hoban in the right place at the right time to fire home after the ‘keeper could only parry Stewart’s initial effort.

The hosts were inches away from a fourth on 73 minutes when Burt crashed a shot off the base of the post.

They didn’t have long to wait to make it 4-0 however as Kamson-Kamara rose highest to head home Amos’ corner kick.

With the win in the bag Glens boss Devine threw on youngsters Cillian McCann and Ciaran Rogers-Duffy to give them a taste of Irish Cup action for the final few minutes.
