Douglas ready for the battle as Glens face Coleraine

Glentoran’s teenage midfielder James Douglas is embracing the battle for game time as Declan Devine’s side prepare for a crucial Sports Direct Premiership clash against Coleraine under the Friday night lights at The Showgrounds this Valentine’s Day (kick-off 7:45pm).
The Glens arrive at The Coleraine Showgrounds in impressive form, unbeaten in 14 matches across all competitions as they look to tighten their grip on second place and continue their pursuit of silverware.
Since November, Devine’s men have won five and drawn two in the league, lifted the County Antrim Shield, secured a BetMcLean Cup Final spot, and advanced to the Clearer Water Irish Cup Quarter-Finals.
James Douglas, who signed a three-and-a-half-year contract extension in November, has already made a significant impact this season, featuring 25 times and netting a dramatic last-minute winner against Linfield in the BetMcLean Cup.
However, with fierce competition in midfield from Fuad Sule, Cameron Palmer, Joe Thomson, Charlie Lindsay and Finley Thorndike, the 19-year-old knows he must keep developing, learning and seizing every opportunity in helping him secure a regular spot in the starting XI.
James Douglas said: “This season has been incredible for me. I’ve played more than I ever expected at this stage and every game has been a valuable learning experience. The trust shown in me by the manager and coaching staff has been massive. He’s started me in key matches and brought me on when we’ve been chasing a win, which means a lot. Knowing I have that backing gives me the confidence to keep pushing myself and contributing whenever I get the opportunity.
“The competition for places in midfield is fierce, but that only pushes me to work harder every day in training. I want to keep improving, earn more minutes and play my part in helping the team push for success. With a cup final on the horizon and so much still to play for in the league and Irish Cup, everyone in the squad is focused on making this a season to remember.”

James Singleton has been ruled out for the rest of the season through injury, but Glentoran have been boosted by the return of new signing Joe Thomson, who is back from suspension following his second yellow card against Linfield in the Irish Cup.
With Singleton sidelined, Douglas acknowledges the importance of squad depth and credits the senior players – particularly Singleton and Fuad Sule – for their guidance and influence in his development.
Douglas added: “James has been a massive influence on me since I stepped into the first-team squad. He really took me under his wing during pre-season and gave me advice on what’s required to play at this level. Along with Fuad, he’s really helped me develop my game, both technically and in terms of my overall understanding of the midfield role.
“His absence is a big blow for the squad. He’s a leader both on and off the pitch, and his experience is invaluable. But it’s up to the rest of us to step up and ensure we fill that void. We have a squad packed with quality, including Joe Thomson, who has shown his ability and will be a big player for us. Everyone knows they must be ready when called upon – that’s the standard at a club like Glentoran.”

Glentoran head into Friday night’s clash unbeaten in 14 matches across all competitions as they look to tighten their grip on second place and continue their pursuit of silverware.
Douglas heaped praise on Declan Devine and his coaching staff, crediting them for driving high standards and creating a never-say-die attitude within the squad.
James said: “The job that Declan and his coaching staff have done so far this season has been outstanding. The standards in training are relentless, the attention to detail is second to none and the never-say-die attitude they’ve instilled in this squad is clear for everyone to see.
“One of our biggest strengths as a team is our ability to keep going right until the final whistle. Even when things haven’t gone our way, we’ve found a way to dig deep and get the job done. Whether it’s Danny’s last-minute goal against Dungannon or Joe’s strike against Loughgall, we keep pushing and fighting for every point.

“We’re going to need that same mentality on Friday night. Coleraine is always a tough place to go and we know we’ll have to battle for everything to get the result we want. But we’re ready for whatever challenge comes our way and we’ll give everything to extend our unbeaten run.”
Glentoran will be targeting their first win over Coleraine this season, following a 0-0 draw at the BetMcLean Oval in August and a 2-1 defeat at The Showgrounds in October.
With both sides strengthening their squads in the January transfer window, the Glens know they will need to be at their best to secure all three points.
Douglas is fully aware of the challenge ahead and has called on the fans to play their part on Friday night.
Douglas concluded: “We know Coleraine will be right up for this one. Dean Shiels has them well-drilled, and they’re a tough side to break down. Like us, they’ve strengthened in January and they’ll be eager to put together a run of results to climb the table.”
“It’s going to take a big performance, but we believe in what we’re building. We’ve worked hard to put ourselves in this position in the league and we trust in our ability to go there and get the result.”
“Our fans have been incredible all season, and we’re hoping they’ll make the trip to The Showgrounds to get behind us again. Their support gives us that extra edge, especially in tough away games like this. We’re determined to put in a performance, take our chances and come away with three points.”
