Double NIBFA Cup Glory for Glentoran Academy!

Mon, 01/05/2017 - 20:41

Glentoran u11 and u13 today both won their NIBFA Cup finals.

The u13 were up first on the day and faced the Glens from Mid-Ulster, Glenavon.

Glentoran shot into an early lead and it remained 1-0 up to half time in what was a tense, edgy first half.

The Glens found their rhythm in the second half however as the League Champions moved up through the gears adding another three goals to run out 4-0 winners on the day

The under 11s were the third of our teams in action today and they were involved in a thriller as they fell 2-0 behind to Tristar early on to two quick fire goals but showed a true champion spirit fighting back to 2-2 before half time.

It was far from over though as they slipped behind again 3-2 before equalising quickly and then powering on to cruise into a 6-3 lead.

Tristar pulled one back before the end to leave a final score of 6-4 to the Glens!

Unfortunately the second game of the day went the way of Coleraine in the under 16 final as our 2001s lost for only the second time in 6 years in this competition.

Ironically that was also to Coleraine in the under 13 quarter final.

The Glens were superb on the day playing some excellent football on a bobbly pitch and lead 1-0 at half time though they spurned several other chances.

Those chances came back to haunt us as Coleraine were clinical in the second half taking the chances that came their way.

A harsh lesson learned and a harsh arena to learn it in with it being the cup final but credit to Coleraine who are packed with quality players and were ruthless when they needed to be.

To win the cup four times in six seasons is incredible so we have no doubt our boys will dust themselves down and be ready to go again next season! Before that however they have an early chance for revenge on Coleraine as they meet in the League Shield final on 13th May.
