Declan Devine has thrown down the gauntlet to his players to transform their cup heroics into consistent league performances as Glentoran prepare to host Ballymena United in the Sports Direct Premiership on Saturday 7th December at The BetMcLean Oval.
Saturday’s fixture marks the third meeting of the season between the two sides, with both teams claiming a victory apiece.
Ballymena edged a tense 1-0 league victory in September against a 10-man Glens, but Glentoran responded in November’s County Antrim Shield Semi-Final with a 2-0 win to secure their place in the first cup final of the season.
With Glentoran currently fifth in the league table and Ballymena seventh, Saturday’s clash represents an opportunity for both clubs to gain momentum in their Sports Direct Premiership campaigns.
Looking ahead to Saturday’s fixture following Tuesday night’s hard-fought 1-0 BetMcLean Cup victory over Linfield, manager Declan Devine commended his squad’s response to last weekend’s draw against Loughgall and reinforced the importance of achieving greater consistency in the league.
Devine said: “The performance against Linfield was full of passion, discipline, and determination—exactly the reaction I wanted to see after the disappointment of Loughgall. It showed the players’ hunger to put things right and their commitment to delivering for the fans. But as I’ve always said, consistency is key.
“We’ve proven in cup competitions what we’re capable of when we play to our strengths. Now, it’s about taking that same mentality and applying it consistently in the league. The players have shown they can rise to big occasions, but at this club, that level of performance is expected every single week.
“The standard was set on Tuesday, and now it’s about sustaining it. Ballymena will be a tough test, but it’s exactly the type of challenge we need. We must stand up, take responsibility, and ensure we deliver a performance that earns a positive result.”
Devine highlighted the vital role of senior players in guiding the squad as they strive for greater consistency, while also praising the contributions of academy talents such as Aaron Wightman and James Douglas.
Devine said: “Leaders like Marcus Kane, James Singleton, and Fuad Sule set the standard with their professionalism and determination. Their influence, both on and off the pitch, is invaluable as we integrate young players into the squad.
“It’s fantastic to see academy graduates like Aaron Wightman and James Douglas stepping up and delivering in key moments. James’ goal against Linfield was a moment of real composure and quality, showcasing the bright future we have at this club. Aaron has been exceptional since his return, consistently putting in outstanding performances and showing incredible resilience.
“A special mention must also go to goalkeeper Dan Gyollai for his consistency and impact this season. Dan has been outstanding all season, making vital saves when we’ve needed him most and giving the squad the confidence to play with freedom.”
Devine also reflected on the challenge posed by Ballymena, urging his side to secure the three points at The BetMcLean Oval.
“Ballymena are a strong, well-organised team, and we know they’ll come here looking to take home the win. They’ve already beaten us in the league this season, and they boast a quality squad capable of causing problems for any team in the division.
“We need to approach the game with focus and intensity from the first whistle. If we match their work rate and play with the same passion and discipline we showed on Tuesday, I’m confident we can get the result we need.”
