Glentoran Football Club can confirm that goalkeeper Dániel Gyollai is set to join Hungarian NB1 side Kolorcity Kazincbarcika SC, subject to international clearance
The undisclosed move, which sees Gyollai return to his native Hungary, will be completed when the Hungarian transfer window officially opens on 1st July.
Since arriving at The BetMcLean Oval last summer, the former Stoke City, Wigan Athletic and Peterborough United goalkeeper established himself as the standout goalkeeper in the Sports Direct Premiership, highlighted by his inclusion in the NI Football Writers’ Association Team of the Season.
His shot-stopping ability, composure under pressure and command of the penalty area quickly made him a fan favourite. This status was confirmed when he was named Glentoran Player of the Year by supporters, becoming only the fourth goalkeeper in the club’s history to receive the honour.
The 6’5” keeper also claimed a hat-trick of Glentoran Player of the Month awards, was named NI Football Writers’ Player of the Month for October, and delivered several unforgettable moments during the campaign, including his dramatic goal against Cliftonville.
Speaking about his move back home, Dániel Gyollai said: “This has been the best year of my football career and I want to thank everyone at Glentoran for making it so special. From the moment I arrived, I felt part of something special. The fans, the players and the staff welcomed me with open arms and supported me every step of the way.
“Leaving is not an easy decision. I do so with a heavy heart, but my family are in Hungary and the time feels right to return home for personal reasons.
“I will always be grateful to the club and I will always follow Glentoran. The BetMcLean Oval and its supporters will stay with me forever. I have no doubt Declan and the team will be challenging for trophies next season and I’ll be cheering them on from afar.”
Declan Devine, Manager of Glentoran Football Club, said: “Dán signed his new contract on the clear understanding that if the opportunity arose to return home to Hungary, we would not stand in his way. His partner, family and closest friends are all based there and this move is purely for personal reasons. That is the only reason.
“Naturally, we are disappointed to lose him because he has been absolutely exceptional since the day he arrived. For me, he was the best goalkeeper in the league. He leaves with our full support and we wish Dán nothing but happiness and success as he begins this next chapter back home.”
Glentoran would like to thank Dániel for his outstanding contribution during his time at The BetMcLean Oval and wishes him every success as he begins the next stage of his career.
