Kelly Crompton wants Glentoran Women to build on last weekend’s emphatic victory when they travel to face Larne in the Sports Direct Women’s Premiership on Friday evening (kick-off 7.45pm).

The Glens returned to winning ways with a commanding 5-1 victory over Crusaders Strikers at Blanchflower Stadium, keeping them within touching distance of league leaders Cliftonville.

It was the ideal response to the previous week’s defeat at Solitude, and Crompton is determined to see the team carry that performance and momentum into Friday’s fixture.

“It was so important for us to get back to winning ways as quickly as possible following the defeat to Cliftonville, so to do that while also producing a good performance was very pleasing,” said Crompton.

“I thought it was a really good team performance and exactly what we needed. In the first half, we maybe struggled to create enough chances and weren’t as clinical as we could have been, but we came out after the break with a different mindset.

“The message at half-time was clear and the team delivered what was asked of them. Overall, I was really happy with the performance.

“Going into Friday, we want more of the same. There were a lot of positives to take from the Crusaders game, particularly the way we controlled certain periods and showed real togetherness as a team.

“We know there are still areas in which we can improve, but that is part of the process. We have to keep building our confidence and consistency with every game.

“The key now is to maintain that momentum without getting carried away. We need to produce the same level of work and focus every week, both in training and on matchday. If we do that, we will give ourselves a good chance in every game we play.

“We know Larne will provide another tough test, as every team does in this league, but we are going there looking for three points.

“We will approach the game with belief, stick to our game plan and look to produce another strong performance.”

Jessica Foy, Nadene Caldwell and Mia Moore were all on target against Crusaders, while Naomi McLaughlin struck twice. Crompton believes having goals throughout the team will be crucial during the closing stages of the season.

“We have so many players who are capable of punishing teams, and that is a massive strength within our squad,” she said.

“There have perhaps been games in which we haven’t taken our chances and it has cost us, but we know we are more than capable of scoring goals and putting matches beyond our opponents.

“The positive is that we are creating opportunities. If we continue to do that, we know the goals will come because we have players throughout the team who are capable of taking those chances.

“Last Friday showed that. We scored at important moments and those goals immediately changed the outlook of the game.

“That is something we need to carry with us between now and the end of the season. It comes down to game management and making the most of the periods when we are on top.

“We know we will miss chances because every team does. The important thing is not to allow that to affect us. We have to refocus immediately and go in search of the next opportunity, because we know it will come.”
