Glentoran Colts made a stunning start to the defence of their Harry Cavan Youth Cup crown with a commanding 10–1 victory over Londonderry side Tristar at The BetMcLean Oval on Saturday afternoon.
Last season, the young Glens lifted the prestigious trophy for the first time in 30 years after a dramatic penalty shootout win over Linfield at the Clearer Twist National Stadium, with Milo Beimers the hero after two decisive saves.
The Colts began their defence without Beimers, who is away with Canada under-17 national team ahead of the FIFA U-17 World Cup. Jack Watt was called into the senior squad for the game against Crusaders, while Matthew Belshaw was on international duty with Northern Ireland national under-17 football team.
With the Academy goalkeeping department stretched, U15s goalkeeper Lucas Pedlow stepped up to make his debut at U18 level.
Despite several key absences, the Glens were on the front foot from the opening minute. Cal Weatherup, who has trained regularly with the first team and featured in pre-season, and Aodhan O’Hanlon both hit superb hat-tricks.
Rory Magee added a well-taken brace, while Saul Harvey and Zach White also got their names on the scoresheet in a dominant display from the holders.
The team now progresses to the next round of the Harry Cavan Cup.
