Glentoran Football Club can confirm that Academy graduate Casey Smyth has joined Newry City on loan for the remainder of the 2024/25 season.

The 18-year-old winger, son of Glentoran legend Gary Smyth, continues his development in the NIFL Championship following a successful loan spell at Dundela in the latter half of the 2023/24 season.

Smyth, who joined the Glentoran Academy at the age of 13, signed a three-year professional contract with the club in March 2023. He made his first-team debut for Glentoran in September 2023 against Crusaders at Seaview in the County Antrim Shield.

Smyth has represented Northern Ireland at U17, U18 and U19 levels and progressed through Glentoran’s Elite Scholarship Programme in partnership with Ashfield Boys’ High School. He was also part of the Club NI programme and represented County Down at the SuperCupNI.

Smyth will link up with his Glentoran teammate, goalkeeper Lorcan Donnelly, who also joined Newry City on loan at the start of January.

Declan Devine, First Team Manager at Glentoran said: "After impressing during his loan spell at Dundela last season, Casey now has another opportunity to build on that experience and continue his development in the Championship. He has already shown his quality at this level and this move will provide him with even more valuable first-team minutes to aid his progression.

"For Casey, this loan is about continuing to develop his decision-making, improving his consistency, and developing the physical attributes required to excel at senior level. He has all the qualities to become a top player and this experience will be crucial in helping him take the next step in his career."

Paul Millar, Sporting Director at Glentoran added: "This loan move is an important step in Casey’s football development. We rate him highly and he’s an exciting young talent with immense potential. Regular first-team football at this level will be invaluable for his progression, giving him the platform to build confidence, work on key aspects of his game and continue developing in a highly competitive environment. Newry City is a great club and we believe this experience will be instrumental in helping Casey take the next step in his career.”
