Jess Foy says Glentoran are determined to keep their winning start to the season going when they take on Crusaders in the Boyle Sports Women’s Cup on Wednesday night (kick-off 8pm).
The Glens have had an impressive start to the new campaign as they followed up an opening night 2-0 victory at Lisburn Ladies with a 3-1 win over Bohemians in the All-Island Cup.
They are on their travels again this week as they head across the city to take on the Crues with Captain Foy determined to come away with another win.
“It’s been a good start to the season for us with two good wins to get us up and running,” said Foy.
“We had obviously targeted picking up two wins, but you never know how things are going to be at the start of the season as you’re building up your match fitness and bedding players in.
“So, to come away with two wins on the road is particularly pleasing, it’s only the start though.
“We are determined to keep building on this and we know that if we build on this momentum and keep working hard then we will be in a good spot.
“We can’t afford to become complement. Our aim is simple, we want to win as many games as possible this season and see where it takes us.
“The Boyle Sports Cup is a key competition for us especially after we missed out in last year’s final, which gives us a lot of motivation this time round.
“We just have to make sure that we channel that in the right way and produce out on the pitch.”
Crusaders lost their opening Boyle Sports Women’s Cup game to Linfield as they went down 3-1 at Midgley Park at the start of April.
Foy though is expecting a reaction from the Crues as they look to get their cup campaign back on track.
“Yeah, they obviously lost their opening game to Linfield so they will be looking to bounce back and get something out of the game against us,” said the 31-year-old.
“We certainly won’t be reading too much into that opening result as it’s gone now. We will be going there expecting a reaction from Crusaders.
“We just have to take care of our own business on the pitch and make sure we do what we need to.
“There is a real determination about the squad to go and make this another season to remember for Glentoran and that is a key driving force behind us.”
Glentoran welcome their trio of Northern Ireland internationals back to the squad following their two excellent wins over Malta in their 2027 World Cup qualifying double-header.
Kascie Weir, Nadene Caldwell and Aimee Kerr were part of the squad with Kerr coming off the bench in both games.
Foy is delighted to see more young players follow in her footsteps from the BetMcLean Oval to the international set-up.
“Glentoran have been so good in giving players a platform to show their ability and create a pathway to the international set-up,” said Foy.
“It’s a very proud history to have had so many players represent their country while playing at the club.
“That looks set to continue with the likes of Kacie, Nadene and Aimee now all involved, as well as the injured Mia (Moore) and Emily (Wilson).
“I know they maybe didn’t get a lot of minutes over the two games, but they will have learned so much from being in that environment and working with other coaches and players.
“That will not only benefit them, but it will also benefit us as a team as well.
“Their presence back in the squad will only further enhance the feel-good factor about the place and we have to make sure we use that to our advantage for the upcoming fixtures.”
