Calum is December's Top Man

Fri, 05/01/2018 - 23:34

Calum Birney has won the Glentoran Supporters Player of the Month award for December. In what was a tough month for the Glens, Calum was consistently effective in a strong defence in which he was ever present. He was a clear winner of the supporters’ poll with 33% of the vote. It was also a month when he committed his future to Glentoran until May 2021, despite strong interest from a number of other clubs.

Calum said on being told of his win: “December was a strange month for me personally. It started negatively with disappointing results against Crusaders and Cliftonville - games I feel we definitely deserved something from. Then we had an even more disappointing result at Carrick, having conceded so late on. However what a difference a few days can make in football as three days later I experienced one of the best moments in my career so far when we beat Linfield on Boxing Day. Then a great personal boost in signing a new contract with the club which I am delighted to have committed for a further 3 years. I really hope we can kick on now in the second half of the season to secure top 6 and also have a good run in the Irish cup.

I just want to thank the fans for voting me as their player of the month, something I am very proud to win and also for all their kind words following my contract announcement. Finally it’s also nice that someone else has won this award so all the boys don’t have to still listen to Elliott bragging about winning it all the time.

Elliott Morris (surprise, surprise) was runner up in the poll with 18% of the total vote.  Others to poll strongly were Kym Nelson and Dylan Davidson (both 11%).
