Former Glentoran goalkeeper, Bertie McGonigal has passed away. Bertie was born in Cookstown in 1942 and played for Chimney Corner before joining Glentoran in 1959.

Bertie spent 3 seasons with the Glens, making 102 appearances. He was in goals when Glentoran won the Gold Cup in 1961, defeating Linfield 4-2 in the final at Solitude.

Bertie McGonigal was transferred from Glentoran to Brighton and Hove Albion where he played from 62-67. After a brief time in South Africa, Bertie returned to Northern Ireland and signed for Linfield. He made over 200 appearances for the Blues before moving to Ballyclare Comrades.

All at Glentoran FC extend their deepest sympathies to Bertie's family and friends at this sad time.
