Amos demands big performance as Glens chase Cup Final spot

Danny Amos wants Glentoran to carry their recent impressive form into Tuesday night’s BetMcLean Cup semi-final against Coleraine (Kick-off 7.45pm).

The Glens are currently on a three-game winning streak and have only tasted defeat once in the last eight matches.

Confidence is certainly high at the BetMcLean Oval and Amos knows how important that is ahead of the mouth-watering clash with the Bannsiders.

Danny Amos said: “I think over the last two months you can see that we are a squad brimming with confidence. That only comes from putting in performances and getting results off the back of it.

“We showed over the festive period what we are all about with the level of performance we produced.

“Yes, it was disappointing to lose against Larne and see our winning run come to an end, but even on the night we still produced a lot of positive things to take confidence from.

“Bouncing back in the next game was vital and we showed that we have enough quality in the squad to do that.

“We followed up that win at Glenavon with victories over Strabane Athletic and away at Dungannon Swifts on Saturday.

“Those results have kick-started another winning run for us but more importantly it has given us a bit of momentum again going into a key stage of the season.

“We have to make the most of that now on Tuesday night and make sure we produce another big performance to get into the final.”

Amos knows it will be a tough test against a Coleraine side who have won on their last four outings.

They have also recruited heavily in January with Mark Coyle, Mark Connolly, James Akintunde and Ben Wylie all arriving at The Showgrounds.

Former Grimsby Town defender Amos though feels Glentoran are in a good place after an impressive January in east Belfast.

Amos said: “Coleraine are a quality side and they have recruited well in January with some high-profile signings.

“But I think our business has been as good as anyone’s when you look at who the club have brought in.

“As well as bringing in proven Irish Premiership players, they’ve are also guys with bags of experience and quality.

“The signing of Aaron McEneff says it all and really shows the stature of Glentoran when you can bring in a player of that standing.

“It also sends out a real message that the club wants to push on and make a real stab at consistently challenging for honours.

“We will need every player from now until the end of the season as we fight on all three fronts.

“Tuesday night is now our most important game as it’s the next one and we know exactly what is at stake.

“We know we will have to be at our best against a very good side, but we have proven twice already this season that we can get a result against them.

“That will count for nothing come Tuesday though as all that matters is what we do out on the pitch.

“Having home advantage is a big plus for us so we have to make the most of it, and I’d urge all the fans to make themselves heard.

“It really makes a difference to us as players and we will need them to help us get over the line.”

Amos was part of the Glens side which lost out in last year’s BetMcLean Cup final to Cliftonville in what was a low point in an otherwise impressive first season in east Belfast.

There have been a few frustrating spells for the 26-year-old this term, but he is hoping that now he is back to full fitness again and back in the starting XI that he will hit the heights of last season again.

Danny said: “Last season was pleasing for me personally as when you arrive at a new club you want to make an immediate impact.

“I was pleased overall with how I performed, obviously as a player you always want more, but it was a good start.

“This season has had its own challenges, but I feel that I am getting back to where I want to be and I think that has shown in my recent performances.

“We all want to make an impact on the pitch and help the team get the results to push on and win things.

“It was great to win the Co Antrim Shield last season and you saw just how much it meant to the fans to bring silverware back to the BetMcLean Oval.

“Unfortunately, we weren’t able to follow that up in the BetMcLean Cup final against Cliftonville but it certainly whetted the appetite to want more.

“We have put ourselves in a good position to go on and challenged for honours again this season and we don’t want that to go to waste.

“We know it’s only February but it’s the business end of the season now and every result matters.

“We have the opportunity to get back to the BetMcLean Cup final again and try to put things right from last season.

“But we can only do that if we go and get a result against Coleraine on Tuesday night. You never know when these opportunities will come around again so you have to make the most of them.

“We have worked so hard to get ourselves into this position that we do not want to let it slip now.

“We want to have more big days out and give our fans plenty to celebrate as they deserve it for the support they have given us.”
