Bio
Rab McCreery joined Glentoran in 1969 and became one of the most formidable defenders of his generation. Starting his career in midfield before moving to right back, he quickly made the number two shirt his own through fearless defending, relentless energy and total commitment to the cause.
Across 335 appearances, McCreery won every major domestic honour, including two league titles and the Irish Cup. He played a key role in the club’s successful European campaigns during the early 1970s, helping Glentoran reach the quarter finals of the Cup Winners Cup in 1974. Although a serious leg injury briefly halted his progress, he returned after more than a year out with the same determination and drive that defined his career.
McCreery captained Glentoran to one of the most celebrated achievements in Irish League history, the unbeaten league title in 1980–81. His leadership and resilience set the standard for those who followed. Tough in the tackle but respected by teammates and opponents alike, McCreery embodied the courage and loyalty that have long defined Glentoran.
Decades later he remains an active figure in the Glentoran Legends team, a living link to one of the club’s most successful eras.
