Bio
Jim Weatherup, known affectionately to supporters as Bimbo, first joined Glentoran in 1955 before returning to The Oval in 1966 to become part of one of the club’s most iconic sides. Quick, skilful and endlessly hardworking, he was a key figure on the right wing throughout Glentoran’s most successful era of the 1960s.
In his first season back he helped secure the Ulster Cup, Gold Cup, City Cup and the Irish League title, narrowly missing out on a domestic double. That same summer he represented Glentoran on the historic Detroit Cougars tour, playing against elite opposition from around the world and scoring twice.
Weatherup went on to feature in every match of the club’s celebrated 1973/74 Cup Winners Cup run to the quarter finals. In total, he made 363 appearances before transitioning into coaching, mentoring young players alongside Walter Bruce at the Colts.
A lifelong supporter and honorary life member, Jim Weatherup’s career captures everything that defines Glentoran: talent, humility and pride in the shirt. His contribution to one of the greatest eras in the club’s history makes his place in the Hall of Fame richly deserved.
