Billy McKeag was signed from Willowfield Parish in 1964 and went on to become one of Glentoran’s most accomplished and admired defenders. Elegant in possession and strong in the tackle, he anchored the back line through a period of immense success and established himself as one of the finest full backs in Irish football.
Over 13 years at The Oval, McKeag made 449 appearances and contributed to four league titles, an Irish Cup, three City Cups, a Gold Cup, the Ulster Cup and the County Antrim Shield. His performances in Europe against clubs such as Rangers, Anderlecht and Benfica showcased his composure and intelligence at the highest level.
A key member of the Detroit Cougars squad in 1967, McKeag also earned international recognition, winning two caps for Northern Ireland and representing the Irish League and Under 23 sides. Consistent, disciplined and respected by all who played with him, McKeag’s contribution to Glentoran’s golden years of the 1960s cannot be overstated. A true gentleman on and off the pitch, his name remains synonymous with class, professionalism and the winning mentality that has always defined Glentoran Football Club.
