In October 2018, Glentoran Football Club received the prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest accolade bestowed upon volunteer groups across the United Kingdom. Often regarded as the equivalent of an MBE for voluntary organizations, this award recognized the exceptional dedication and impact of Glentoran’s extensive volunteer network.
The award was formally presented at The Oval, Glentoran’s historic home ground in East Belfast, by Sir Nigel Hamilton, Vice Lord Lieutenant of Belfast. This ceremony honored the unwavering commitment of over 200 volunteers who contribute their time and skills to the club’s operations and community initiatives.
Former Glentoran Chairman Stephen Henderson emphasized the vital role these volunteers play, stating, “This tremendous accolade reflects the fantastic work undertaken by over 200 volunteers to maintain the pivotal role played by Glentoran at the heart of our community. The simple reality is that the club would not be able to operate without the willing support of so many people at the heart of the Glentoran family.”
The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, established in 2002 to commemorate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, celebrates outstanding contributions made by volunteer groups to their local communities. Recipients are selected through a rigorous assessment process and receive a certificate signed by the Queen and a commemorative crystal.
Glentoran’s recognition highlights the club’s deep-rooted commitment to community engagement. Beyond football, the club’s volunteers are instrumental in various initiatives, including youth development programs, charitable outreach, and maintaining the club’s facilities. Their efforts ensure that Glentoran remains a cornerstone of the East Belfast community, fostering a spirit of unity and support.
This award not only honors the selfless contributions of Glentoran’s volunteers but also underscores the profound impact that dedicated individuals can have on their communities. It serves as a testament to the club’s ethos of service and its enduring legacy of community involvement.
