The Glentoran Elite Scholarship Programme is a pioneering initiative designed to combine elite football development with academic achievement for aspiring young female footballers. Delivered in partnership with Ashfield Boys’ High School, the programme offers a unique dual pathway for talented players aged 16–18, enabling them to pursue both their sporting ambitions and educational goals.
At the heart of the programme is a commitment to high-performance training. Players receive daily coaching from UEFA-licensed Glentoran staff, focusing on technical ability, tactical awareness, fitness, and personal development. The training is designed to mirror a professional club environment, preparing participants for careers in football—whether that’s in the domestic game, at the international level, or within sports-related industries. Many players also benefit from exposure to scouts and opportunities to compete in elite competitions across Ireland and the UK.
Academically, the programme offers a BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sport, which is equivalent to three A-levels and provides UCAS points for university entry. Delivered by Ashfield Boys’ School staff, the course covers a range of topics including sports psychology, anatomy and physiology, coaching principles, and sports leadership. This ensures that students not only train like professionals but also gain valuable qualifications that open doors beyond the pitch.
The success of the programme is evident. In April 2025, the Glentoran Elite Scholarship squad won the Northern Ireland Schools’ U18 Cup Final with a commanding 4–0 victory—highlighting the strength of the coaching, the dedication of the players, and the programme’s growing reputation. Several graduates have gone on to represent Northern Ireland at youth levels and have secured scholarships abroad.
Beyond trophies and accolades, the programme is about empowerment. It supports young women in reaching their full potential, builds confidence, and promotes teamwork, resilience, and leadership. The Glentoran Elite Scholarship Programme is not just shaping athletes—it’s shaping future leaders on and off the pitch.
