Glentoran U13s made it two wins out of two with a hard fought, and sometimes scrappy 5-3 victory over Newbridge at Orangefield this morning.
Newbridge will probably feel that they should have come away with at least a draw from this game but Glentoran's firepower up front gave them the
3pts in the end. Newbridge started like they meant business and were first to every ball,
controlling the midfield, and causing the Glentoran defence all kinds of
trouble. Only some solid handling from Glens keeper John Gunning, and last ditch
defending kept Newbridge at bay.
The Glens were to make Newbridge pay for their failure to convert their
chances when a powerful run down the right flank from Stuart Martin led to his
cross somehow slipping under the keepers body and into the net. Would this give the wee Glens the lift that they needed. The answer was no,
as Newbridge came back at them. The Glens couldn't seem to get their passing game going. Maybe the early 9am kick off was affecting their performance.
Once again though the Glens would score against the run of play. This time the goal was pure class. On the left hand side of the box Jordan Dougherty
collected the ball, held off two Newbridge defenders, and fired an unstoppable
20yd rocket into the keepers top left hand corner.
Half time Glentoran 2-0 Newbridge.
Within 5 minutes of the restart Newbridge found themselves back in
the game with a superb strike form the edge of the box. 2-1 Game on. The Glens started to apply some pressure after that and were
rewarded when Cameron Tharma went in bravely with the keeper. The ball found its way to
Dylan Elliott and he poked home from 5yds to make it 3-1. Then 5 minutes after that the talented young striker got his 2nd goal when he
fired low and hard into the bottom corner to make it 4-1. Thats 4 goals in two games for the ex-Bloomfield star who is turning out to be a great signing for the Glens.
The game looked dead and buried soon after when Glens skipper
Daniel McKee fired home from 15yds to make it 5-1, but Newbridge still wouldn't
lie down and replied with two late goals. Both goals being quality strikes giving the
Glens keeper no chance.
Full time: Glentoran 5-3 Newbridge
Although they weren't at their best you could never question the young Glens
commitment. It was a tough game and they worked hard as a team to make sure the 3pts was theirs. Man of the Match Corey
Jenkins worked tirelessly at right back while the few chances the Glens got up front where taken superbly.
This time last year we might have let this game slip away. This year is a different story.
Well done guys.
