Glentoran U12
7
- 0 Riada U12
Saturday 3rd December
Glentoran took to the field with great belief for this
match due to the result the previous week with two goals in mind. To keep a
clean sheet and to score more goals than the previous game.
Several changes were made to the line up due to players
lateness and saw us opt for a defensive unit of three with Thomas Templeton
coming back into replace Ross Wilson who was absent (competing in a national
boxing championship, Well done!) along with Raymond Tate and Justin Barlow ( Sam Johnston in nets). Midfield
Comprised of Glen Cleland, Andrew Mellon, Craig Briers, Sam Knox and Mathew
‘the tiger’ Irwin. Finally upfront had the pairing of Ben Anderson and David
Fee. On the Bench for this encounter were Mathew Dunn, Darryl Hand, Jamie Tharma
and Richard Annett.
During the first half we failed to control the game in the
manner that has now become the norm with this exciting young team, instead well
individually took to many touches on the ball, failed to play simple passes and
were very disorganised at the back. While they had no real chances and we had
several opportunities as well as scoring three goals the management weren’t
over the moon by the performance.
The second half saw us making four changes and our play
became sharper after the break. This resulted in us scoring four more goals and
leaving the pitch clear winners yet I believe we never really created or
produced the outstanding performance our sideline supporters witnessed in the
previous game. Also to be fair our players are only learning how to play in a
3-5-2 system and Riada Battled until the last whistle.
The Best Bit however was the GOALS! I found it hard to
choose but I think I’ve narrowed it down to three Andrew Mellon Received the
Ball from outside the 18 yard box at a corner Kick, he took one touch to control
it, look up and the second touch to put it in the top corner. Outstanding!
Mathew Dunn was in the box with his back to goal when he controlled a waist high
ball with his left foot, turned and volleyed it into the roof of the net with
his right foot before it touched the ground. I’m sure Brian will say he taught
him that in training! Lastly Justin Barlow calmly walked up to take penalty, put
the ball on the spot and proceeded to strike it in the top right corner of the
cross bar and in. it was the best penalty I’ve seen taken and his first goal
for Glentoran to boot!
Man of the Match Justin Barlow. Cool, calm and collected at
the back!
