One
of the first entries into your new 2008 diary is
a must see event on Monday 28th January 2008 at
Dundonald International Ice Bowl when six teams
comprised of some of the greatest Irish League
Players from the 80's and 90's go head to head
in an exciting new Soccer Sixes Tournament,
guaranteed to capture the imagination of local
supporters.
The tournament is the brainchild of Glentoran
Captain, Paul Leeman, currently in his
testimonial year, and has been made possible
through a partnership arrangement with host
Dundonald International Ice Bowl and sponsor
Podium 4 Sport (formerly ViSport) Speaking today
Paul said, "I can remember the last Soccer
Sixes Tournament being run over a decade ago and
for the life of me I couldn't believe that it
wasn't an annual event given the entertainment
value and the support it had."
Through the partnership we are delighted to
bring N Ireland into line with many other areas
within Europe by establishing a new tournament
for Legends which continues to develop local
sporting events for local people." And
Legends from Ards, Cliftonville, Crusaders,
Glentoran, Linfield and Portadown have been
quick to sign up to the inaugural event which
will be run annually.
The names read like the who's who of football in
the 80's and 90's with players such as Tommy
Kincaid and Darren Erskine of Ards, Marty Tabb
and Gerry Flynn of Cliftonville, Stephen Baxter
and Glenn Dunlop of Crusaders, Jim Cleary and
Barney Bowers of Glentoran, Lee Doherty and Alan
Dornan of Linfield, and Vinny Arkins and Gregg
Davidson of Portadown. Event sponsors, Podium 4
Sport (formerly ViSport) believe this event
compliments their already extensive involvement
in promoting local sport for all age groups and
urge the supporters of the clubs involved to
really get behind their teams.
Managing Director Paul Rothwell said, "This
is an event which has been missing from the
local scene for too long and we are very proud
to be involved in bringing it to life. Like many
locations in N Ireland, the Dundonald area is
experiencing major investment in entertainment
and this tournament will be a significant
addition to that development."
Speaking about Dundonald International Ice
Bowl's involvement, Jill Simpson, PR and
Marketing Manager said, "The council is
delighted to bring an event of this size into
our annual programme and it is so pleasing to
see the Soccer Sixes return to the Ice Bowl. It
also gives an opportunity to honour and
recognise the work of one of the Borough of
Castlereagh's citizens Dr Malcolm Brodie MBE, as
Patron of the event with a trophy dedicated to
his name."
