Message
of Thanks from Paul Leeman
Thursday
27th March
|
|
As you will most likely be aware, this season
is Paul Leeman's Testimonial year, and of course many supporters have been
supporting the many great events that have been organised by Glentoran and
the Paul Leeman Testimonial Committee for his benefit. The latest of these
events was the Halfers Draw at last Saturday's game at The Oval.
Following the Halfers draw Paul Leeman
would like to issue a personal message of thanks to the organiser of the
Halfers draw, Tommy McKee and also to all supporters who purchased a ticket
for the draw.
The draw proceeds are usually split in half
between the winner and the club, however on this occasion Paul received half
of the proceeds along with the winner Robert McMurtry.

Glentoran
3 - 0 Limavady United
Tuesday
25th March
|
|
The top of the Carnegie Irish Premier League
is getting closer for the Glens as they leap-frog Cliftonville tonight
following a 3-0 win over Limavady United.
The first half saw plenty of Glentoran possession,
some fine flowing football at times, but amazingly no goals. The Glens
came out of the blocks quickly and hammered away at a packed United
defence. However the Limavady Defence proved solid as they did not
concede and seemed happy with the score line at 0-0.
The second half came and again the Glen put
the pressure on. It was Darren Boyce who would open the scoring at 50
minutes after Limavady's defence failed to clear. Boyce flicked the
loose ball which lobbed over the keeper and into the top corner of the net.
The second goal followed on 69 minutes as
Shane McCabe grabbed his first ever goal in a Glentoran shirt. Boyce
finished off the game sealing 3 points and second place for the Glens after
he again found himself on the end of a loose ball placing his shot low to
the goalkeeper's right side.
This result moves Glentoran up to to second
after Cliftonville fell 1-0 to Newry City, leaving the Glens 2 points ahead
of the Reds and 3 points off the top of the table.

Carnegie
Premier League
Institute 1 - 2 Glentoran
Saturday
15th March
|
|
Glentoran continued their winning ways today
with a 2-1 victory at the Riverside Stadium today. It was a game that would
never look out of reach for the Glens, but one they had to work hard to win.
After looking very confident in the opening
part of the game, Glentoran failed to pick up the important goal giving
Institute confidence to pressure Elliot Morris in he Glentoran goal.
The first goal of the game came from David
Scullion's great run into the Institute penalty box. Scullion would
surely have scored, however he was brought down causing the referee to award
a penalty. After the initial foul was committed Michael Halliday had
forced the ball over the line, but the referee had already pointed to the
spot so the goal would not stand. Colin Nixon converted the penalty
kick for the second game running to make it 1-0 t the away side.
Glentoran again looked comfortable but
never getting close to top gear. They were forced to go for the
victory one more time as Ruairi Boyle equalised for Stute on 58 minutes with
a bullet header from a well placed cross.
After a tense 12 minutes, Glentoran once
again took the lead and all 3 points. A corner kick for the Glens
would be touched out to Daryl Fordyce who's powerful strike from long range
was too much for Stute goalkeeper Michael Doherty to handle.
This win takes Glentoran within four points
of league leaders Cliftonville and three behind 2nd place Linfield.
With six games left in the Carnegie Premier League, things are really
heating up at the top of the table.

Setanta
Cup
St. Pat's Athletic 3 - 3 Glentoran
Monday
10th March
|
|
Glentoran's first Setanta Cup outing of the
2008/2009 tournament ended with a 3-3 draw at Richmond Park, Dublin.
Alan McDonald's men proved throughout the
game that they were very much the better team, taking the lead after only 5
minutes. Michael Halliday was on hand to pounce on a defensive error
to make it 1-0, but the game would draw level after 22 minutes when O'Neill
hit back.
The equaliser was heavily protested by
Elliot Morris, earning a yellow card for his efforts, claiming that he had
both hands on the ball when it was pushed over the line.
Colin Nixon took the lead for the Glens
from the spot after Gary Hamilton was held back in the penalty area.
Hamilton was passing the last defender when he was pulled back leaving the
referee no choice but to award the spot-kick.
At this stage the Glens were cruising and
on 84 minutes Daryl Fordyce would score in what seemed to be the final major
play of the game to make it 3-1. With only 6 minutes of the game
remaining, the St. Pat's players began a relentless attack which would see
O'Neill score an 88th minute header.
With only 2 minutes left, supporters would
be forgiven for seeing it as nothing but a consolation goal, however this
would change deep into injury time when Keith Fahey struck past Elliot
Morris claiming a point for the home side.
Despite the disappointing final result, the
Glentoran team were in fine form, as were the very vocal travelling
Glentoran support. Glentoran's Setanta Cup campaign continues on
Tuesday 8th April when Linfield are hosted at The Oval for the first time
since their defeat on Boxing Day.

Glentoran
2 - 1 Coleraine
Friday
7th March
|
|
Tonight's rescheduled Carnegie Premier League
game finished with a well earned 2-1 victory to the Glens. It was a
hard fought game that saw the Glens take the lead through David Scullion on
56 minutes although having the better of the chances throughout the first
half.
It seemed as though the game would play out
from here with a second goal on the cards, however Coleraine struck back
from the penalty spot after Jamie McGovern was penalised for holding John
Watt in the area.
The equaliser put more spice into the game
forcing both teams to go for the win, but the difference once again was Gary
Hamilton. The top scorer Hamilton found himself on the end of a Jamie
McGovern cross to head home for the Glen and sealing the victory and another
vital 3 points.

Sports Irish Cup
Glentoran 1 - 2 Donegal Celtic
Saturday
1st March
|
|
Glentoran today crashed out of the Irish Cup
going down 2-1 to Donegal Celtic. Two goals from Glentoran's on-loan
striker Rory Hamill sealed the fate of the Glens in what was a bad day for
all at The Oval.
Rory Hamill took the west Belfast club a
goal up on 6 minutes when a seemingly straight-forward clearance from
Michael Dougherty was blocked and bounced straight back into the goal. Gary
Hamilton leveled it on 12 minutes with a picture perfect free kick from the
edge of the DC box. However, it was Hamill again who would capitalise
on another goalkeeping blunder to tap in the winner on 23 minutes.
The loss sees the Glens out of the Irish
Cup, while DC will enter the draw for the semi-finals.
