Glentoran
2 - 0 Finn Harps
Tuesday
26th February
|
|
Glentoran tonight had a great mid-season
work-out with a 2-0 win over newly-promoted Eircom Premier League side Finn
Harps. It was a night that saw some great returns to the Glentoran
first team and also some debuts from the young up-and-coming future stars.
The first goal for the Glens came from a
selfless Peter Steele opting to pass across the penalty area to the awaiting
Philip Carson to blast home. It was Steele himself who would claim the
second goal of the game and his first for the Glentoran first team as he
headed past James Gallagher meeting an Andrew Hall cross.

Newry
City 0 - 3 Glentoran
Saturday
23rd February
|
Glentoran
made up some ground on league leaders Linfield
today, as a dull first half at the Newry showgrounds
gave way to a confident and convincing second half
display, that the home team simply could not
contain.
A double strike from the influential Daryl Fordyce,
and a header from David Scullion completed the
scoring after a second half display that could have yielded
even more joy for Alan McDonald's men as the
football was free-flowing and the chances came in
abundance.

Larne
0 - 3 Glentoran
Saturday
16th February
|
|
The Glens left Inver Park yesterday victorious
after a hat-trick from Gary Hamilton.
It was a game in which Larne posed no
serious threat to Glentoran's dominance throughout and in retrospect could
have been a much heavier defeat for the Harbour Rats.
Gary Hamilton opened the scoring on 14
minutes when his left-foot effort went past Chris Keenan in the Larne
goal. Hamilton made it 2-0 after 40 minutes as his previous effort was
dropped by Keenan allowing an easy finish.
The final goal came from a Kyle Neill
corner kick which floated over the defence to the awaiting Gary Hamilton to touch
in with his head.
There were great efforts all round, when
Kyle Neill had a spectacular effort tipped over, while confidence was high
after his 3rd goal, Hamilton hit the post with a a long-range curling free
kick, and forced a great save from Chris Keenan again from outside the Larne
penalty area.

Statement
from the Board of Directors
Thursday
14th February
|
|
The tremendous success and superb performance
of our team last Saturday at Dungannon, having overcome a difficult fixture
with reduced resources, is testimony to the effort and commitment of the
entire management and playing staff, and a great credit to our club.
It is also to be noted that our supporters
that gathered in Stangmore Park, in huge numbers, played no little part in
getting behind the team, and in the true spirit of supporter participation
ensured we had a successful day out.
Sadly all of this has been overshadowed by
the actions of the mindless few who resorted to what can only be described
as rude, vulgar and disgusting behaviour towards people with affiliations to
both Dungannon and Glentoran. These few people used foul, abusive and
threatening language to other supporters particularly women in their
immediate area without any justification whatsoever. One of these women was
an expectant mother and the distress caused to her and her friends casts a
cloud over what should have been a wonderful occasion. Furthermore Glentoran
supporters with a true regard for this club sought to intervene only to be
treated with the same level of abuse. The abuse was then extended to a
Dungannon player who had been substituted and was returning to join his
family in the stand area. All of this without any justification whatsoever.
It would also seem that the intervention of
stewards, and two uniformed members of the PSNI, had little effect in
changing behaviour and that to all right thinking supporters will be
extremely disappointing.
Let us be very clear on something. People
that support Glentoran are representing themselves, their families and their
club. If they cannot behave in a reasonable manner at our fixtures then they
would be best staying away. The absence of authorities that could or would
enforce controls is no justification for outrageous and unacceptable
behaviour, which falls well below the standards this Club aspire to.
These events bring shame and disgrace on
genuine supporters of the club, and the club itself. The perception
will be that we/they are all the same, and that perception will continue
until such times as we do something that will confront the thugs, hence we
are asking for your co-operation in this matter. From the clubs’ point of
view doing nothing is not an option and we want to address this matter head
on. Please assist us to identify those responsible and we will deal with
them in a manner that is appropriate and proportionate when we have had
their explanation for their behaviour.
People that cannot behave appropriately cannot be allowed to extend their
anger and abuse to all and sundry and expect no reaction. We all share
the responsibility as responsible Glentoran supporters to help eradicate
such from our club so please assist us by helping identify these culprits
without any further delay. It is our club and therefore our responsibility.

JJB
Sports Irish Cup 6th Round
Dungannon Swifts 0 -2 Glentoran
Saturday
9th February
|
|
A 10-man Glentoran team left Stangmore Park
this afternoon with a deserved spot in the quarter finals of the JJB Sports
Irish Cup after beating Dungannon Swifts by two goals.
Controversy struck on 18 minutes when
Darren Boyce was booked for what appeared to be a clean, ball-winning
challenge. It was 2 minutes later where an off the ball incident was
picked up on by the referee's assistant prompting the referee to produce a
second yellow card followed by a red for Darren Boyce.
Despite being reduced to 10 men, it was the
Glens who had most of the possession and attempts on goal. The best of
the first half chances fell to Michael Halliday, having one attempt cleared
off the goal line and another denied by Swifts goalkeeper Dwayne Nelson.
Despite having the better chances, it took
the Glens over an hour to tally the first goal of the game, when some neat
passing play led Michael Halliday onto goal. Halliday's attempt was
blocked, however the ball fell into the path of Gary Hamilton to make it
1-0.
The second Glentoran goal finished the game
off on 75 minutes, when Gary Hamilton was fouled by Adam McMinn inside the
Dungannon penalty box. An eager Jason Hill stepped up to slot the ball
past Nelson from the spot.
A well earned and hard-fought victory for
Glentoran today sees them enter the quarter-finals of the JJB Sports Irish
Cup drawing a home game against Donegal Celtic. The quarter-finals are
due to be played on Saturday 1st March.

Carnegie
Premier League
Glentoran 5 - 1 Donegal
Celtic
Friday
1st February
|
|
Glentoran sealed all 3 points
in tonight's league match with Donegal Celtic, claiming their first home
victory since Boxing Day. The game was epitomised by the excellent
performances of Shane McCabe in midfield and Darren Boyce taking his role in
attack.
Some great flowing football
saw the Glens pressure the DC defence consistently while the Glentoran back
four had little to deal with. The goals came spread throughout the
game with Scullion opening for the Glens on 7 minutes. The second half
started at 2-0 after Darren Boyce scored his first Glentoran goal on 17
minutes, slotting his one-on-one opportunity through the goalkeeper's legs.
Just after the break Michael
Halliday made it three goals for the Glens and on 55 Kyle Neill netted the
fourth. DC pulled a goal back directly from a free kick on 57 minutes,
but never looked like causing any further upsets. Northern Ireland U21
International Daryl Fordyce finished the game on 89 minutes when young
striker Peter Steele played him through onto goal to slot home from close
range.
