2007/2008
Player of the Season: Jason Hill
Sunday
27th April
|
|
Congratulations
go to Jason Hill for being voted Glentoran Player of the Season for
the 2007/2008 campaign. The Player of the Season award is voted
for by the Glentoran supporters in the last few weeks of the
season.
Jason Hill epitomises the current young
breed of Glentoran players committing himself to Glentoran and truly
"playing for the shirt".
Jason is currently in his second term
at The Oval and has finally found his place in the first team.
Beginning as a striker at Glentoran he worked his way up through the
ranks at the Oval until, Jason found his way into the starting squad
as a substitute under Roy Coyle.
However a lack of first team football
took him to Ards after which Hill returned to the Oval where his
natural left foot found him placed as a winger on the left.
Happy to play wherever he could, Jason made the role
his own and eventually drifted back to cover at the left side of
defence. Following some fine displays in defence it seems Jason
has found his natural position and solidified himself as one of the
top defenders in the league.
His never-say-die attitude is an
inspiration to his team mates and supporters while standing steadfast
in defence he also remains confident and capable going forward.
It is this attitude on top of his skill on the pitch that has made him
truly worthy of the 2007/2008 player of the season award.

Glentoran
3 - 1 Portadown
Saturday
26th April
|
|
Glentoran today rounded off the
2007/2008 Carnegie Premier League with a confident and decisive
victory over Portadown.
It was a game full of attacking play
from Glentoran almost finding the net on countess occasions, striking
the woodwork 3 times and forcing the Ports defence to clear 3 clear
cut chances off their line.
After an opening few minutes that saw
the Glens mount a non-stop offense towards the Portadown goal, however
it was Andy Smith who would open the scoring for Portadown against the
run of play.
The game continued as such as it
looked as if the Glens chances were never destined to cross the
line. However it only took Michael Halliday a minute after the
break to draw level and from then on there was only one team in it.
Gary Hamilton fired passed is old
club on 62 minutes with a volley, while Daryl Fordyce headed in with
15 minutes remaining.
The game was not without it's controversy
as Philip Craig received a red card for bringing down Gary Hamilton as
he was clear through on goal an an incident in the first half that saw
Portadown's Andy Smith and Glentoran's Gary Hamilton and on-loan
goalkeeper Chris Keenan all receive yellow cards.
It was a fine display from Glentoran
today that showed that while the 2007/2008 league season is over, the
supporters have much to look forward to in the coming years.

Keenan
signed on one match loan
Thursday
24th April
|
|
Transfer listed Larne goalkeeper Chris
Keenan has been signed to Glentoran on a one match loan deal following
last week's injuries to both Elliot Morris and Michael Dougherty. The
IFA have given special dispensation to Glentoran to allow the transfer
outside of the normal transfer windows.
The signing follows a turbulent match
last Friday with Cliftonville in which Elliot Morris was taken off
with a groin injury and Michael Dougherty suffered a broken
wrist. Morris is set to be out of action for 2 weeks while
Dougherty will be out for 4-6 weeks. With the domestic league finishing
on this coming Saturday, both goalkeepers are set to miss the finale,
while Keenan is expected to step in.

Friday
night's Halfers winner
Saturday
19th April
|
|
While every Glentoran supporter would
have left The Oval happy last night following the 2-1 victory over
Cliftonville, Jonathan Taylor was probably the happiest of all after
scooping £420 in the half time Halfers draw! Jonathan won £420
after his ticket number 8805 was drawn by Jamie McGovern.
Congratulations to Jonathan on his big win!
A reminder to all supporters that next
Saturday's game against Portadown at The Oval will be the final match
of the 2007/2008 season, and also your final chance to pick up the
winnings in the Halfers draw until after the summer break!

Carnegie
Premier League
Glentoran 2 - 1 Cliftonville
Friday
18th April
|
|
Glentoran tonight drew level with league
leaders Linfield following a hard fought 2-1 victory over
Cliftonville.
The game began with a quiet first
half with few chances for either team. The momentum swayed
between the sides but it was Kyle Neil who would come closest to goal
as he met with the ball a mere 2 yards from goal at the back
post. Failing to make clean contact with the ball, it bounced
seemingly in slow-motion toward the crossbar an was subsequently
cleared by the reds defence.
The second half saw the game open up
, and it was only 2 minutes into the half when Gary Hamilton took the lead
for the Glens with an over head kick that made it's way past John
Connolly in the Cliftonville goal.
All appeared to be settled as
Glentoran continued to push to solidify the victory. However, Eddie
Patterson's side were not about to roll over. An 80th minute
corner kick narrowly missed the out-stretched fist of Michael
Dougherty to be fumbled past the line by O'Connor.
While conceding the equaliser, the
Glens kept a steady pace an it was only 4 minutes later when they took
the lead and the winning goal of the game trough Michael
Halliday. It was a goal reminiscent of his history making goal
on Boxing Day as he popped up at the near post to meet a perfect
cross, this time from Paul Leeman. Halliday had further chances
in injury time but the score remained 2-1 and the Glens walked away
with 3 points.
While Glentoran left with all the
points, it was a victory that took it's toll as Elliot Morris was
forced off the pitch due to a thigh injury and Colin Nixon being
substituted with suspected ligament damage.

Turnstile
problems at tonight's game
Friday
18th April
|
|
As some Glentoran supporters may be
aware, there were some problems in entering tonight's Carnegie Premier
League game against Cliftonville as one of the turnstiles was closed
just prior to kick off.
Unfortunately this was due to one of
the turnstile operators falling ill just prior to kick off.
Glentoran FC would like to apologise to those fans who missed the beginning
of the game as a result of these unforeseen circumstances and to
assure all supporters that all possible measures were taken to ensure
all fans were admitted to The Oval as quickly as possible.

Setanta
Sports Cup
Glentoran 1 - 1 Derry City
Tuesday
15th April
|
|
Glentoran continued their Setanta Cup
campaign tonight with a hard fought 1-1 draw with Derry City.
Alan McDonald's side was again
heavily altered from the team that drew with Linfield on Saturday no
fewer than 7 changes made to the starting eleven.
It took some time for the Glens to
find their rhythm in this game as the Candy Stripes dominated the
opening 15 minutes exploiting any available space in the
defence. While Derry were playing most of the football and
having some chances, it was Glentoran who would look most dangerous in
front of goal.
As momentum swayed to the East
Belfast men, a goal seemed on the cards but it wasn't to be. It
was Derry City striker Conor Sammon who would open the scoring on 51 minutes
from the penalty spot after Niall McGinn was taken down by Jamie
McGovern.
After conceding against the run of
play, Colin Nixon would level it after 71 minutes. Nixon, who
was brought into play as a substitute found a loose ball in the Derry
City penalty area exploiting an unmanned gap in the goal with a well
placed strike.
While both team tried to push on for
3 points, it seemed that a draw was the right result as neither team
could finish the game on top.

Carnegie
Premier League
Linfield 0 - 0 Glentoran
Saturday
12th April
|
Alan McDonald sent his Glentoran side onto
the field of play today, charged with taking three vital championship
points in order to draw level with Linfield at the top of the Carnegie
Premier League.
But despite a largely one-sided game, and excellent performances
through-out his team, the one thing missing was a goal. It was that
disappointment which means Linfield remain 3 points clear at the top of
the table tonight.
The nature of the performance, however, has surely set up the Glens for a
strong finish to the campaign, and signaled the intent of all at the club
to bring the Gibson Cup back to East Belfast before too long.

Setanta
Sports Cup
Glentoran 1 - 3 Linfield
Monday
7th April
|
|
A
heavily altered Glentoran team went down 3-1 to Linfield this evening in
the Setanta Sports Cup group stage in what was a mere warm up game for
Saturday's potential league decider.
The
Glens lined up with no fewer than 10 changes made to the team that faced
Crusaders on Saturday, giving the young up-and-comers great experience in
a big-two derby.
Darren
Boyce opened the scoring on 8 minutes as Glentoran started brightly.
The youth of the Glens side proved to be vital as the youngsters chased
every ball giving nothing but 100% effort.
Unfortunately
Paul McAreavey would find the net for the Blues on 32 minutes after
Michael Dougherty spilled a cross. McAreavey struck again on 49
minutes drilling low into the corner of the Glentoran net, while Dickson
made it 3 for Linfield sealing the points.
Glentoran
had some great opportunities from the impressive young striker Peter
Steele and Dean Fitzgerald, but neither would find the net.

Parking
Facilities in the Mersey Street Area
Saturday
5th April
|
|
Most of our supporters will be familiar
with the waste ground adjacent to the City side of Mersey Street School,
and that the construction of social housing is scheduled to commence
there very shortly.
For some time now supporters have
been using that waste ground area to park their cars, however
, contractors have now
fenced off a considerable area of this development site, resulting
in a
significant reduction in car
parking space. This notice is to advise supporters to allow more
time at the
remaining home match days to find parking alternatives.
It is anticipated that as construction
develops on the site over time that more parking space will be made
available, but
we would ask supporters to also please consider the parking requirements of
residents.

Glentoran
made it 8 wins from their last 8 Irish Premier League outings today,
dispatching Crusaders 2-0 at Seaview, to remain hot on the heels of league
leaders Linfield.
A
double strike from Dean Fitzgerald in the first half, means that Alan
McDonald's men will go into next week's Big Two derby knowing that a win
will pull them level with the Blues at the top of the table.
The
winning Halfers Draw ticket belonged to Gary Cowan of the Ballymac GSC.
Gary left Seaview with £420 but was not the only winner as half of the
proceeds went the ever popular Forza TV.

Halfers
Draw for Forza TV
Tuesday
1st April
|
Everyone is aware of the great camaraderie
amongst Glenmen and I think it's important that when the situation arises
that we look after our own, so on Saturday against Crusaders at Seaview
there will be a Special Halfers Draw with the profits going towards the
excellent Forza TV.
Mark Gibson and his team have been
supplying a brilliant and Free service
for Glentoran supporters worldwide. Lets get this straight, it might
be free to the rest of us, but maintaining the website and investing in
new equipment is not free to Mark, so hopefully those who are attending
Seaview on Saturday will support this Special draw at an away game which
means that it will not conflict with the draw's ethos of raising
funds for the parent club.
We have a chance to recognise Mark and
the Forza team's great efforts. We will have sellers at each entrance so
please watch out for us!! - The winner will still receive half of the pot
and the winning ticket will be displayed on a board at Half-time.
The winner can pick up their winnings by
making themselves known to Halfers Draw organiser Tommy McKee or the Forza team during the game or
we will wait at the exit for any claimer after the game. If for some
reason the winner doesn't see us. The winner can also claim their prize by
calling 07802
354696.
