Yorkie remembered by close friends

Mon, 01/06/2020 - 11:45

Legendary Glentoran striker Ron “Yorkie” Manley was this weekend commemorated in the most appropriate manner by hid friends in the Holland family.

Ron sadly passed away in June 2018, a deeply sad occasion for his legions of friends and admirers in the Glentoran Family. Louise Sewell, Ron’s god daughter, and her husband Thomas Holland, who grew up alongside the Manley family, manage the ball boys and ball girls at the Oval on matchdays. Last year they named their baby son Korey Ron Holland after Ron, a close family friend for many years until his sad loss.

ULSTER FOOTBALLER OF THE YEAR AWARDS 2020

Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 virus, The Castlereagh Glentoran Supporters Club has been forced to postpone the Ulster Player of the Year awards night, a sad occurrence for awards run highly successfully by the Castlereagh club for 69 years. The awards will return next season.

However, one award still took place on Saturday, as legendary manager and current Glentoran Director of Football Roy Coyle was presented with a blue riband award by the Castlereagh members.

Many thanks to the Glentoran Supporters Committee (1923) for use of this material. The "Team Talks" series will consist of interviews with current squad members with John Grayden this season.

The Managers: Billy Johnston

Fri, 29/05/2020 - 02:46

For the second in this series on our league or cup winning managers of the past four decades, we concentrate on Billy Johnston’s spell, This tenure is often ignored by historians as it came between the much more high profile Ronnie McFall and Tommy Jackson. But it was a period in which we won the first two of our four successive Irish Cups in the eighties. Billy Johnston has been out of football since leaving the Oval in 1987, so for this edition, Ian Clarke spoke to Jim Cleary, captain during the Johnston era, for some of his insider’s thoughts on the period.

In this new series we will be publishing interviews with former Glentoran players and managers where they talk about a photograph that means a lot to them. Some will be reproduced from a series written by Brian McClelland for the Glentoran Gazette in the mid-1990s with other, newer stories we will be writing over the next few weeks. This one was published in the Gazette in the 1994/95 season, when Brian met our legendary winger, Johnny Jameson.
