Welcome to Glentoran Bobby Burns

Sat, 03/10/2020 - 20:29

Glentoran FC is delighted to announce the loan signing of Bobby Burns from Barrow FC, pending international clearance.

Bobby will need no introduction to Glentoran to supporters, having been an outstanding player for Glenavon prior to his move to Hearts at the start of the 2018-19 season. In that first season he played in a winning Scottish Cup semi final for Hearts and was an unused sub in the final at Hampden Park. Bobby spent last season on loan in Australia before joining newly promoted Barrow during the close season.

Bobby, who turns 21 next Wednesday, worked very closely with our Assistant Manager Paul Millar throughout his Glenavon career and has cited his relationship with Windy as a key motivator behind his move to the Oval. He has been in the Northern Ireland senior squad and is a regular in the national Under 21 team, heading away with Glentoran teammates with the squad next week.

Mick McDermott: “Bobby fits the profile of what we are looking for at Glentoran: quality, honesty, pace, enthusiasm and a strong desire to compete.    He is another strong addition as we move forward with this project.

When Paul Millar made me aware that Bobby could be available, we decided to act immediately - his experience and performances in the Irish League, Scotland and Australia in recent years made this a very easy decision for us.  I am delighted to have him on board and I’m sure the Glentoran fans will welcome him immediately.”

Bobby: “The Glens clearly have a really good plan going forward so I’m really happy to be part of it. I’d watched them in the Irish Cup Final and in Europe and was really impressed. So, when I knew there was a chance of a loan I got in touch with Mick and Windy right away because this project really appeals to me. The facilities here, such as the new gym, are just as good as anywhere I’ve been in England, Scotland or Australia. The attitude around the club is very professional and there’s a great hunger for success at the club. That suits me as I’ve come to a club and a team that I think will want to win the league this year and some of the cups. Now I just want to get going and start winning matches at this great club”.

The club would like to thank Barrow AFC for their participation and co-operation in this arrangement and wish them and manager David Dunn well for their first season back in the Football League,
