Nicky comes home

Tue, 21/09/2021 - 12:49

Record appearance holder Colin Nixon has re-joined Glentoran after eight years away from the Bet McLean Oval.

Colin will take up the position of Technical Director at Glentoran Academy with immediate effect. In this newly created role he will have responsibility for overseeing the Academy at Glentoran FC, including all age groups up to and including Under 18.  He will be responsible for shaping the future direction of the Academy, its staff and players.  He will develop, manage and deliver the Academy coaching programme and coordinate the day–to-day running of the Academy.

Colin will work closely in his new role with Andy Mathieson (Head of Player Development), and with Norman Kelly and Jo McColgan (U20 management) to ensure players are developing towards the first team. Stephen Lowry will continue to manage the administration side of the Academy.

Nicky said to www.glentoran.com earlier today: “I’m absolutely delighted to have been offered the opportunity to return to a club that means the absolute world to me. It’s such an exciting time for Glentoran and I can’t wait to start working with all the coaches and especially the exciting talented players within the ranks. I would like to thank Mick and Paul for the faith they have shown in me”.

Mick McDermott: “It is great news for our entire community to welcome Colin back to Glentoran.

We have searched long and hard to find a suitable coach to fill this important role. When Colin became an option in recent weeks we acted quickly and are delighted that he accepted the invitation to join us.

He is Glentoran through-and-through and I have no doubt that he will have a massive role in inspiring our young players to give their all for the red, green & black.”

Nicky has an incredible record as a player with Glentoran in a first team career that lasted from 1995 to 2013. He made 794 appearances, scored 89 goals and won no fewer than 22 winner’s medals with the club.

Everyone at Glentoran is delighted to welcome Nicky home.
