Glentoran FC is pleased to announce that Declan Devine has accepted the position of Team Manager on a permanent basis.
Glentoran Chairman Colin Jess said of the appointment: “The Board of Directors are very pleased to confirm that Declan has accepted the position of Glentoran Manager.
In the month Declan has been Interim Manager he has identified the areas he believes can be fixed in the short term and he has also outlined a very compelling outline of what needs done this close season to put the first team back on a winning footing.
Over the Easter break the Glentoran Under 18 & Under 16 NIFL Academy squads travelled to London to experience the professional academy environments of top Premier League clubs West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur.
The three-day trip started early on Easter Sunday when the squads left Belfast airport and travelled to London in preparation for the days ahead.
This game epitomised the 2023-2024 season as Glentoran condemned themselves to a 5th place finish with this lifeless performance at Solitude this afternoon and Cliftonville returned to winning ways without any meaningful challenge from the visitors. The season was also reflected in the lowest travelling Glentoran support in many years at a fixture that generally has a big appeal.
In a disappointing day all round, Glentoran Women suffered their second consecutive defeat in the group stage of the Avenir All Island Cup after travelling to Galway to meet the holders this afternoon.
The Glens were a goal down in 9 minutes through an unstoppable drive from Kate Thompson and despite a couple of decent efforts from Rachel Rogan and Demi Vance went into half time a goal down with everything to play for.
Things stayed level until the 80-minute mark but a 3-goal blitz in the final 10 minutes made the scoreline emphatic if a trifle flattering to Galway.
Saturday 20th April
Kick Off 3.00pm
On Saturday we travel to North Belfast to Solitude for game 37 in this season’s Sports Direct Premiership.
With 3rd place now secured, Cliftonville’s league form since progressing to the Irish Cup Final has dipped, with only 1 point gained from their last 4 league matches and including an 8-1 annihilation by league leaders Larne at Inver Park last weekend. They most recently lost 2-1 away to North Belfast rivals Crusaders in midweek.
Glentoran lost out to Larne in the cruelest of circumstances as Jonny Russell's unfortunate own goal with virtually the last kick gave the Premiership champions all three points at the Oval this evening. Declan Devine made a number of changes from Saturday's defeat at Coleraine with Harry Murphy, Marcus Kane, Seanan Clucas and Shay McCartan all returning to the starting XI.
Tuesday 16th April
Kick Off 7.45pm
Tomorrow night we face Larne for the fifth and final time this season as the reigning Sports Direct Premiership champions visit the Bet McLean Oval.
Beth Stafford’s graphic of Jonny Russell, David Fisher and Junior fronts Tuesday night’s 40-page Glentoran Gazette in which Paul Leeman talks to Matthew Brown about the team’s future. Manager Declan Devine talks about the here and now saying that, after a bright opening on Saturday, the performance wasn’t good enough and he expects a lot better in the fight to finish fourth in the league, while we profile a Larne side that has turned into a machine under former Glens coach Tiernan Lynch.
Glentoran Women put down a major statement of intent with this emphatic home victory in the first domestic game of the 2024 season in the quarter final of the Women’s Premiership League Cup.
It was international striker Emily Wilson, just back from injury, who led the way with a hat trick, including goals in the 10th and 22nd minutes when she started the scoring by capitalising on mistakes in the Derry defence. In between those goals Derry’s was sent off for 2 very early yellow cards.
