Glens defeated in Sligo

Tue, 05/03/2013 - 00:53

4 first half goals put Sligo Rovers on course for a Setanta Sports Cup semi-final place. The home side went in front with just 2 minutes on the clock. A long, high ball to the edge of the Glentoran area saw Calum Birney and Rovers debutant, Anthony Elding challenge and the ball fell to the in rushing Lee Lynch who, unmarked, was able to smash it past Elliott Morris. The home team dominated with the young Glentoran side restricted to a few rare attacks, mainly through Jim O'Hanlon. Sligo Rovers doubled their lead on 20 minutes when Lynch's right wing cross was headed home at the back post by Elding.

Two goals in two minutes virtually killed this tie off. David Cawley skipped past Colin Nixon and crossed for Ryan Connolly to score (37) and Lynch grabbed his second of the game on 39 minutes. Joseph Ndo's ball into the area was headed home by Evan McMillan 7 minutes into the second half but Glentoran tightened things up and prevented any further goals. Skipper Colin Nixon had a great chance to grab a consolation goal right at the death but fired narrowly over from the edge of the area.

Glentoran: Morris, Bradley, Hill, Birney, Nixon (capt), McAlorum, McGuigan, Callacher, O'Hanlon, M. Murray & McComb.

Subs: Waterworth for McComb (58), R. Clarke for Callacher (68) and Burns for M. Murray (77).
