Contract News: New deal for Mal

Thu, 01/07/2021 - 20:08

The club is delighted to announce that Mal Smith has signed a new contract to remain at the club until at least June 2023.

Mal (20) is very much one of our own, being from East Belfast and having joined the club as an eleven-year-old in August 2012. He has come right through the ranks of Glentoran Academy before making his first team debut in a 5-0 away win at Warrenpoint Town in February 2019. Since then Mal has made 13 first team appearances scoring one goal. His most significant appearance so far was as a substitute in the victorious Sadler’s Peaky Blinders Irish Cup Final in July last year. He also played the full ninety minutes in last season’s County Antrim Shield Final.

Mal said to www.glentoran.com on signing his contract: "I’m very happy to have been given another contract by the Glens. I’ve been here most of my life and I love the club. Now I want to really kick on and establish myself in the first team squad and win a lot more trophies with the club”.

Mick McDermott: “As I have stated previously, Mal will go on to be a top player in our league, I have no doubt about that.  Like most young players, he has been unlucky to lose a year due to the Covid pandemic, but he has trained consistently well and is now ready to play in the Premiership.

Mal has a talent and hunger that will serve him very well in the time to come. He is a Glentoran fanatic and really wants to pull on the red, green and black every week.

I’m delighted to have Mal extend his contract for another 2 years”.

Congratulations Mal and here’s to a lot more great times for you in a Glentoran shirt.
